A Cultural Family Discovery

A journey of culture and beach fun through this fascinating country!

Leap from the deck of your junk boat for a swim in Halong Bay, try your hand at lantern making in Hoi An, cruise and cycle around the Mekong Delta and even have a go at sampan rowing! Discover the highlights of Vietnam on this memorable family journey from north to south!

  • Day 1 - Hanoi

    Days 1-3 Hanoi

Where better to begin than Hanoi, Vietnam’s small elegant capital on the Red River Delta in the country’s north. An historic city brimming with culture, Hanoi is an intriguing mix of identities and architecture. French colonial mansions and leafy boulevards contradict the maze of winding alleys and narrow streets in the captivating Old Quarter! These streets were originally named after the goods that were sold along them – Silver Street, Paper Street and Silk Street still exist today! Getting lost in their tangled maze is one of Hanoi’s joys – but better to have a local guide! Kids will love exploring by cyclo (Vietnam’s iconic answer to a rickshaw) – remember to agree a price before you set off!

Hanoi’s daily life is as thought provoking as its abundance of impressive buildings, museums, beautiful temples and pagodas. Locals gather at dawn beside Hoan Kiem Lake to practice Tai Chi whilst mopeds weave through the streets, perilously evading hawkers with shoulder-poles balancing burdens of produce. Vibrant, yet not as frenetic as Ho Chi Minh City, Hanoi retains a refreshing ‘old world’ charm which enthusiastic young explorers will find fascinating! Don’t leave without seeing a water puppet show – an enchanting ‘must-do’ in Hanoi! We can even arrange a visit to a water puppet artisan to learn the origins of this unique tradition!

Stay: 3 nights in 2 interconnecting Rooms at Apricot Hotel, including breakfast

  • Day 4 - 5 Halong Bay Bhaya Legend

    Days 4-5 Halong Bay

Travel east to beautiful Halong Bay, where a luxury private cruise vessel awaits! Built in the style of a Vietnamese royal junk, and exclusively yours for two days of discovery and adventure, the crew of ‘Bhaya Legend’ will take you on a bespoke journey through the thousands of limestone islands in this legendary bay. Swim and snorkel off pristine white beaches, kayak through a tunnel under a karst mountain, explore incredible caves, cycle and trek on Cat Ba Island, try Vietnamese cuisine, visit floating fishing villages (even fish with local fishermen) and witness the sunrise and sunset over this stunning UNESCO World Heritage Site – there’s little wonder it’s one of Vietnam’s most prized treasures!

Stay: 2 nights on the Bhaya Legend Cruise including all meals and some excursions

  • Day 6 - 9 Victoria Hoi An

    Days 6-9 Hoi An

Transfer back to Hanoi airport for a hop south to Hoi An – a charismatic riverside town with a wonderful mix of Vietnamese, Chinese and Japanese influences from its former trading port days. Famed for its tailors, bustling markets, historic shophouses illuminated by lanterns at night and beaches close by, Hoi An’s old town atmosphere is beguiling! Getting clothes made here can be addictive – try to leave space in your suitcase!

Enjoy 4 nights at Four Seasons Nam Hai, set on a quiet stretch of beach within easy reach of town. We can introduce you to local elder, Mr Huynh Van Ba, who will happily share his stories about the history of lanterns and their place in local culture. Children will delight in making their very own lantern to take home! Families with older children can join a cycling tour to Tra Nhieu where traditional Vietnamese village life is preserved. And no stay would be complete without paddling through the coconut jungle in a unique Vietnamese bamboo basket boat!

Stay: 4 nights in a Family Villa at Four Seasons The Nam Hai, including breakfast

  • Day 10 Hoh Chi Minh

Days 10-12 Ho Chi Minh City

Fly south to Ho Chi Minh City (formerly Saigon), Vietnam’s liveliest city. Fast-paced, fashionable and frenetic – Ho Chi Minh is mesmerising and exciting! Don’t be surprised at seeing four or five family members clinging to their mother’s midriff on a moped as they rush through the city – Ho Chi Minh has an air of pulsating chaotic energy! InterContinental Asiana Saigon Hotel is your home for the next 3 nights and its central location provides easy access to famous landmarks such as the Saigon Opera House, the magnificent Notre Dame Cathedral and the eclectic Ben Thanh Market!

Culture-curious families will benefit from the local knowledge gained on a walking tour. Budding young historians may enjoy a fascinating excursion out of the city to the Cu Chi tunnels – an elaborate network of underground tunnels used by the Viet Cong guerrillas as hiding spots during the combat. The rural village nearby offers light relief in the rice fields where children are invited to join friendly farmers to learn traditional gardening and farming methods.

You can’t leave Vietnam without seeing the Mekong Delta – a worthwhile day from Ho Chi Minh! Journey south to Ben Tre to board a cruise through the waterways before swapping boat for bicycle for a ride through the villages. Visit a noodle factory, try sampan rowing and enjoy meeting locals like Mr Hung – a famous sticky rice maker!

Stay: 3 nights in 2 interconnecting Deluxe Rooms at Liberty Central Citypoint Hotel

  • Day 13

Transfer to the airport for your onward flight or perhaps head to Six Senses Ninh Van Bay or Six Sesnes Con Dao for some down time! Cambodia is also easily combined with Vietnam or add a few days in Luang Prabang in Laos.
