The Residence Maldives
The Maldives is noted for its stunning necklace of tropical island pearls and The Residence Maldives at Dhigurah is based on possibly the most far-flung of the lot. Located in the lush and remote Gaafa Alifu Atoll, it’s so far away from the international airport on Malé that a seaplane connection isn’t possible. Instead, it’s a 50-minute domestic flight but, trust us, what awaits you is well worth it. A leafy carpet of coconut, banana and palm trees covers the island, while its fringes are laced with pillow-soft white sand. A wonderful house reef lies just offshore, home to a bounty of colourful corals alive with clouds of crayon-coloured fish. The Residence Maldives is a resort that has a real edge-of-the-world feel coupled with edge-of-your-seat views, captivating you right from the first time you lay eyes on this island paradise.
The Residence Maldives
In short, every room on the island is generously sized to say the least. The bedrooms are huge, the bathrooms are giant and the private pools (every villa comes with one) feel Olympic in size. Light and airy with whitewashed walls and teak-beamed roofs, each villa is perfectly placed for waking up to a sun-dappled Indian Ocean first thing in the morning and finishing every day with sunsets casting a crimson hue over your villa. Beach Pool Villas are enveloped in emerald greenery and open out onto what feels like your own private patch of sand, while the Water Pool Villas came with ladders straight into the gin-clear lagoon beneath. There are also two-bedroom options both on the beach and overwater, which are perfect for families who need some extra space.
The Residence Maldives has an eclectic range of restaurants, with The Dining Room a thatch-topped open dining area serving a range of international, Asian and Indian Ocean-inspired cuisine across breakfast, lunch and dinner. Tucked away in tranquil gardens lies Li Bai, which serves up sumptuous Cantonese cuisine – the flavours of the dim sum dance around your mouth! Stay near Li Bai for a cocktail at Long Island while watching the sun sink beneath the horizon. Down by the poolside, Café Del Sol is great for lunchtime bites and come the evening, there are tasty tapas and sundowners.
Memorable dining experiences are also available, including a romantic dinner under the stars or a picnic on a private sandbank, while a beach barbecue is organised by the resort once a week. As guests at the Dhigurah edition of The Residence Maldives, you’re also able to eat at the restaurants on its sister island of Falhumaafushi, which includes The Fulhumaa, an overwater restaurant specialising in fresh seafood and grilled meats.
With a world-class house reef and a plethora of excellent dive sites a short boat ride away, the emphasis here is on the limitless snorkelling and diving adventures you can have. Across the entire Gaafu Alifu Atoll, there are a staggering 1,200 species of fish and coral, while inquisitive reef sharks have been spotted in schools of up to 200. The magical marine life doesn’t stop there, with bottlenose dolphins, manta and eagle rays and green turtles also inhabiting the crystal-clear waters, the latter particularly abundant.
For a twist on your marine adventures, the resort’s in-house dive centre also offers night snorkelling and fluoro diving, where specialist equipment is used to bring out the bright glows of the underwater world after dark.
On land, visits to neighbouring islands and local villages give you a glimpse of Maldivian culture, while a complimentary bike is given to every guest, so even cycling around this island paradise is a pleasure!
The Spa by Clarins is a tranquil retreat encased by tropical gardens. A true sanctuary for the senses, its overwater treatment rooms ensure you’re soothed by the sound of the waves, as well a wealth of holistic treatments and massages carried out by a team of experienced therapists. A range of daily yoga sessions are also available, which you can either do in the yoga pavilion or as you're floating on the hotel’s huge main infinity pool.
From the moment you are greeted on the arrival jetty by The Residence staff to waving good bye to you as you leave, you are made to feel like you are the only guests on the island. With top notch service and amazingly friendly staff you are made to feel very special.
Relax in your huge villa and laze around your decking with your very own private pool. Not only are your bedrooms very spacious you even have a separate living room, giving you so much space.
With so many romantic experiences it's hard to find the time to simply laze on the beach. We recommend the dolphin safari – head out to sea on search of the pods of dolphins and watch them playing in the ocean. You may even be lucky enough and spot a blue whale!
