Klahoose Wilderness Resort, British Columbia
Klahoose Wilderness Resort is an award-winning Indigenous eco-lodge tucked into the remote Homfray Channel on British Columbia’s wild Sunshine Coast, at the gateway to Desolation Sound. Known in the Klahoose language as Thee chum mi yich “further back inside”, this is a place that feels profoundly far away yet is one of BC’s most accessible wilderness lodges. Arrive via a flight from Vancouver to Port Hardy, followed by a short boat transfer through glassy inlets and mountain-framed seascapes, or opt for a private seaplane straight to the lodge.
With just 22 guests at full capacity, Klahoose is intimate and quietly powerful, a true Canadian wilderness hideaway with the rare privilege of being guided by the people who have stewarded these lands for generations. Stays are three or four nights with set arrival days and the experience blends cultural immersion with elemental adventure. Think cedar-scented air, saltwater mornings and stories that anchor you to place. Open May to October, the season shifts from whales and waterfalls in early summer to grizzly bear viewing during the late summer, in line with the annual salmon run.
Klahoose Wilderness Resort
Accommodation is split between cosy lodge rooms and one- or two-bedroom cabins, all facing the water with woodland-and-ocean views. Interiors are simple, warm and quietly charming with fireplaces, comfortable seating areas and thoughtful touches throughout. The scale is boutique and personal, yet the vibe is always warm and welcoming. Families with children of any age are welcome, as are couples and groups and the communal rhythm of the resort makes it easy to feel part of something special, while still giving you space to retreat into your own private corner of wilderness when you want it.
All meals are included from dinner on arrival to breakfast on departure, served with relaxed, personal hospitality that fits the rhythm of your day. The culinary style is fresh, seasonal and rooted in place, inspired by the nutrient-rich Salish Sea, coastal farm-to-table communities and ingredients foraged from the surrounding rainforest. Expect a blend of local flavours and First Nations dishes, shaped around sustainable produce and daily adventure.
Little touches add extra meaning, whether that’s the coffee brewed with Spirit Bear Coffee Company beans (Indigenous-owned and deeply connected to BC wildlife conservation), or the house lager created with Port Hardy brewer Townsite.
Every activity for guests of Klahoose is led by local Indigenous guides, giving each outing depth, context and a sense of privilege. Early season (May to mid-August) brings marine tours for whales and wildlife, rainforest walks, waterfalls and spring bear viewing. From mid-August to mid-October, the salmon run draws grizzlies into Toba Inlet, where you’ll watch them from fixed viewing platforms, one of the great wilderness spectacles of Canada.
Between headline adventures, days can be as active or as slow as you like: paddleboarding, ocean swims, forest hikes, foraging, pulling up prawn traps for dinner, photography, campfires and even behind-the-scenes tours of the lodge’s off-grid energy systems. For an extra thrill, heli experiences can be arranged, from glacier walks and fly- fishing to stand up paddle boarding in truly untouched places.
Pampering here is wilderness-style: less spa menu, more deep exhale. After long days outdoors, Klahoose invites you to unwind in the way nature intended. Think wood-fired sauna warmth to salt-air stillness and the kind of quiet that resets your nervous system. There’s a restorative rhythm to life here: return from bear viewing or marine tours to a crackling fire, a hot drink and the soft evening light over the channel. This is a place to slow right down, to listen, breathe and feel the grounding energy of the land and sea around you.
