Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge
Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge sits deep within Clayoquot Sound on Vancouver Island’s wild west coast, surrounded by protected rainforest, winding rivers and remote Pacific shoreline. It’s the kind of place that feels far removed from the everyday and completely grounding from the moment you arrive.
Getting here is part of the shift in pace. Whether you arrive by seaplane, gliding over endless forest and inlets, or by boat through calm, wildlife-rich waters, the journey gently eases you into your surroundings. As the lodge comes into view, you begin to understand its scale. A small collection of white canvas tents set quietly along the riverbank, immersed within 600 acres of untouched wilderness.
This is luxury, but in a far more understated and meaningful sense. There is no formality here, no sense of show. Instead, everything is shaped by the landscape around you. Days unfold outdoors, spotting black bears along the shoreline, kayaking through early morning mist, or horse riding through towering pines. In between, there is time to pause. To notice the stillness, the sounds, the space.
Evenings bring everyone back together. Firelight, thoughtful food that reflects the region and an easy, unforced atmosphere where stories from the day naturally spill out. It feels relaxed, personal and quietly special.
Clayoquot Wilderness Lodge
25 white canvas safari-style tents sit lightly within the landscape, spaced along the river and tucked between the trees, each one offering its own sense of seclusion.
Inside, the feel is warm and considered. Polished wood floors underfoot, luxurious king beds layered with soft linens and details that nod to classic expedition style. Some open out to outdoor showers, where you can stand beneath the canopy with nothing but the sounds of the forest around you.
For couples, the Ensuite Tents feel calm and private, with just enough indulgence to balance the wild setting. Families or small groups are best suited to the Two Bedroom Family Tent, offering space to spread out while still keeping that connection to the outdoors.
Our favourites are the riverside tents. Early morning mist, a coffee in hand, the quiet rhythm of the water moving past. It sets the tone for the day before anything has begun.
Food here is shaped entirely by its surroundings. Ingredients are drawn from the Pacific Northwest, from the ocean, the forest and nearby producers. You might find freshly caught seafood, seasonal vegetables or elements that have been foraged locally, all brought together with a light, confident touch.
Meals are served in a relaxed, shared setting. Long tables, soft lighting and the low hum of conversation after a day spent outside. It feels easy, unforced and generous. The rhythm becomes part of the stay. A proper breakfast before heading out, something simple and well prepared in the middle of the day, then an evening meal that brings everyone back together.
Each day at Clayoquot can look completely different. You might head out by boat at first light, watching for whales or bears along the shoreline, or take to the water by kayak, moving through quiet inlets where everything feels slowed down. On land, there are forest hikes, horseback rides and trails that wind through some of the oldest landscapes in the region.
Guides shape each experience with a deep understanding of the area, adding context to what you see without ever interrupting the sense of discovery.
For those wanting to go further, heli experiences open up remote terrain that few people reach. Vast, raw and completely absorbing.
The lodge itself operates entirely off grid, powered by one of British Columbia’s largest solar installations. It is not unusual to see bears resting beneath the panels, a rare and quietly powerful meeting point between modern innovation and the natural world.
There is no pressure to do everything. The real luxury is choosing your own pace. Some moments stay with you just as much as the bigger adventures. Sitting still, watching the light shift, noticing the details you would usually miss.
After time spent outdoors, everything here gently brings you back to balance. The spa is set within the trees, quiet and understated. Treatments focus on restoration, using natural ingredients and techniques that feel grounding rather than elaborate.
Hot tubs sit among the forest, steam rising into the cool air. Saunas offer warmth after a day on the water or trails. There is space to pause, to slow down, to let the surroundings do their work.
Whether starting the day with a yoga session overlooking the Sound or glacial immersion to awaken the senses, nothing feels overdesigned or overly scheduled. It is simply about feeling better, in a place that naturally allows it.
For families, this is the kind of place where time outside naturally takes over. With a minimum age of six, children are old enough to fully take part, whether that’s spotting wildlife from the water, learning to kayak or heading out on forest trails with guides. There is plenty of flexibility to shape each day around ages, energy levels and interests.
What stays with families are the moments in between. The excitement of what you might see, the stories retold over dinner, the simple satisfaction of being outdoors together from morning through to evening. It’s a setting that invites curiosity, builds confidence and gives families a completely different way to spend time side by side.
It is also a place where families naturally reconnect. Away from screens and daily distractions, children become completely absorbed in their surroundings, and parents often remark that it is one of the few holidays where everyone is fully engaged from start to finish.
