LUX* South Ari Atoll Resort & Villas, Maldives

Most Maldivian islands are no more than the size of a postage stamp, a sandy speck floating in the bold blue of the Indian Ocean. But LUX* South Ari Atoll is found on Dhidhoofinolhu, which at 2km long and 200m wide is one of the largest islands in the Maldives. They've certainly made this extra space count, keeping the 4km-long beach beautifully pristine and offering one of the most comprehensive dining offerings in the Maldives – eight restaurants and five bars, to be exact. It's an island perfect for couples or families who want that extra bit of room to explore (it takes an hour to wander around the island's entirety, much of it through manicured tropical gardens) or just a secluded sandy corner to discover and enjoy by themselves.

Beyond the beach lies countless marine meccas waiting to be explored. LUX* South Ari Atoll is one of the best places in the Maldives for diving and no less than 50 dive sites lie within an hour's dhoni ride away, each one promising rainbow-hued reefs and a rich array of marine life. Manta rays and whale sharks are the big draw here, especially as the resort is one of the few locations where you can witness the latter year-round, and a diving excursion with either is one of the most unforgettable things to do in the Maldives.

In the rare case you do find yourself missing home, you might stumble across a vintage red telephone box standing in the shade of a palm tree. One call home (international calls can be made at no extra cost) will only make you realise how special LUX* South Ari Atoll really is.
