Baros Resort & Hotel, Maldives

Small, yet perfectly formed, sums up Baros. Found on a picture-perfect semi-circle of an island floating in the North Malé Atoll, it was one the first three resorts in the Maldives when it opened in 1973 (the first was only opened a year earlier) and it has been wooing honeymooners and families ever since. Baros has aged like a fine wine and stills feels first-day fresh from the moment you step onto its postcard-worthy beach, combining world-class comfort with island authenticity.

It was opened as one of the country's first luxury dive resorts and its wealth of marine magic remains a major drawcard for things to do, with its sapphire-tinged waters confounding the assumption that it could only be PhotoShopped. Its house reef, which you can snorkel straight from the beach, is teeming with fish, turtles and sharks while its five-star PADI-certified dive centre is suitable for all types of water baby.

One of the many reasons we love this intimate resort is the devotion of its staff – many have been with Baros for many years and we'd be hard pushed to find a resort that offers a more genuine service than the one awaits you here. If they adore it here then we know you will fall in love with Baros, too.

Highlights

Baros Maldives

Sleep

The accommodation is everything you dream a fantasy desert island to be: elegant and contemporary yet idyllic and romantic. Thatched roofs sit in perfect harmony with their surroundings, while the interiors offer lavish bathrooms and state-of-the-art amenities.

For many, the quintessential Maldivian experience comes in the form of overwater bungalows, your own private escape set over the shimmering waters of the lagoon, and the Water Villas at Baros do not disappoint – think wooden decks complete with four-poster day beds and steps leading down in the azure waters.

For added exclusivity, we love the Water Pool Villas with their private swimming pools set into the deck. A dedicated villa host is on hand to attend to your every desire. The beach-based accommodation is no less dreamy. Deluxe Villas sit peacefully beneath the swaying palm fronds in gardens of flowers just footsteps from the glorious sands and the equally romantic Baros Villas have expansive outdoor space and stylishly chic interiors.

Eat

When it comes to dining, Baros' executive chef makes no apology for his claim that whilst the resort may be small and in the midst of the Indian Ocean, the food is comparable to the best in the world. With three restaurants and two bars you are spoilt for choice, particularly when The Lighthouse Restaurant is acclaimed as one of the best in the Maldives. A legendary name across the archipelago, The Lighthouse is as much an architectural marvel with its towering white sail as it is known for its modern creations infused with exotic flavours.

Beyond the iconic Lighthouse Restaurant, Cayenne Grill offers al fresco dining perched over the lagoon, with Indian flavours influencing its meat and fish dishes. Encased by a freshwater infinity-edge swimming pool that overlooks the lagoon, Lime Restaurant's à la carte menu is a tasty mix of Maldivian curries, Asian dishes and classic cooked breakfasts so you can start the day right.

For a quiet daytime tipple, Sails Bar is set among silky sands and under the shade of palms, while The Lighthouse Lounge offers a range of cocktails to the backdrop of the best sunset views on the island.

Play

Baros has been open since 1973 and their dive centre, which opened just six years later, was one of the first in the Maldives. A PADI-certified five-star Gold Palm Dive Centre, an experienced team is hand to offer courses to everyone, right from underwater novices to veteran divers, with night dives to spot the biofluorescence an option for the most adventurous! Baros Maldives has the great advantage of being situated in the middle of the North Malé Atoll, which gives the resort year-round opportunities to visit the finest dive spots. You don't even need to leave Baros, as its house reef is one of the best in the Maldives.

Due to the long-term establishment of the dive centre and its owners, Baros is privileged enough to have have access to exclusive diving locations, so you won't be disturbed by anyone else during your exploration! If you're interested in swimming with manta rays, we'd recommend visiting Baros in March or April or from September to November.

Diving isn't the only thing you can do at Baros. You can go and explore the capital island of Malé, see the sunset on a private dhoni or head out on a cruise to spot dolphins or whale sharks. Water sports are aplenty, too, including waterskiing, catamaran sailing and wakeboarding.

Pamper

Tucked within lush foliage, the Baros Serenity Spa is a sanctuary of private suites where experienced therapists are on hand to deliver a range of therapeutic and utterly rejuvenating treatments. You can choose from a selection of scrubs, wraps, massages, facials, eye treatments and more. Yoga and meditation classes are also available, either on the beach or on the Lighthouse deck.

Honeymoons

Baros is a beautiful classic island offering a romantic and quiet high end honeymoon experience. Baros Maldives has been voted the No. 1 hotel in 2018 for the Tripadvisor Travelers choice awards.

With spacious villas, private pools and romantic private experiences it’s the perfect island to celebrate your wedding.

As young children (under 8) are not permitted on the island, Baros appeals to couples looking for a quiet escape. If you can peel yourself away from your four-poster day bed, in the day head out snorkelling over the amazing house reef – Turtles are sure to be seen and at night Indulge in one of the best restaurants in the Maldives at ‘Light House’ whilst watching the sunset and listening to jazz music for a truly romantic evening.

Best Room for Honeymooners

The Deluxe Villas are spacious and fresh and perfect for lazy days and offer a lovely outdoor garden shower.

If you are a water lover then we highly recommend the Over Water Villas where you can go snorkelling straight from your villa and see the most incredible sea life. Each water villa has a four poster day bed and direct steps in to the ocean.

For the ultimate in luxury go for the Over Water Pool Villas – This is the perfect room if you are looking for privacy and don’t want to leave the comfort of your own villa. At night watch the lights twinkle in your sunken pool and even enjoy dinner by your pool.

Romantic Features

Baros has a fantastic choice of honeymoon experiences and romantic dining options.

One of the most romantic dining experiences is to have a dinner or picnic on their nearby sandbank. You can privately hire the sandbank for a romantic dinner whilst watching the sunset with just the two of you and your own staff whilst enjoying a stunning dinner created by your personal chef.

The Piano Deck is also a very elegant and unique romantic dining experience. Poised above the lagoon and shaped like a Piano it is the ideal dining experience for a romantic dinner under the stars.

If you love sailing then you will love a private Nooma Experience. Set sail on a traditional Maldivian sailing Dhoni boat. Gourmet meals are served on board by your personal butler, dine on the secluded sun deck and sleep in the double bedroom while cruising the North Male Atoll.

The more active honeymooners may enjoy a Sunset Dolphin Cruise or an Island Discovery trip. We also recommend the Sunset Cruise with Champagne and Canapes and recommend indulging in the wonderful Spa.

FAMILIES

Unlike most resorts in the Maldives, Baros only accommodates children aged eight and up. Due to this, there is also no kids' club at the resort.

However, that doesn't mean there isn't plenty for families with kids eight years and older to enjoy! Here's just some of the activities you can take part in:

  • Diving with glowing squid.
  • An on-resort tennis court.
  • Private yacht charters.
  • Infinity pools.
  • Poolside breakfast.
