Ikurangi Eco Retreat, Rarotonga
Tucked away amongst coconut palms, tropical gardens and pawpaw plantations on the east side of Rarotonga, just inland from the glorious lagoon, Ikurangi Eco Retreat is the first glamping retreat with tented accommodation in the Cook Islands. Award-winning and with a strong sustainability ethos, Ikurangi is an ideal accompaniment to a stay in a resort or villa on Rarotonga's south coast or along Muri Beach. Luxury safari tents with views to Mt Ikurangi and the Takitumu range, with the sweet scent of mango in the air, offer guests a unique and very special experience in Rarotonga's less visited hinterland.
Ikurangi Eco Retreat
Our favourite accommodation at Ikurangi Eco Retreat has to one of the four Luxury Safari Tents, shipped from Africa for an authentic glamping experience in the South Seas. Raised wooden platforms, sturdy canvas and outdoor decking lead to simple but beautiful interiors - peaceful sanctuaries featuring natural materials and neutral tones, with cushions and throws adding splashes of colour. Power keeps your phone charged, should you feel the need to stay connected, and there's a fridge for you to fill with goodies to accompany your sundowner. Outdoor bathrooms with rain showers and modern composting toilets (this is glamping, after all!) complete this luxury tented experience. For honeymooners, or those wanting something extra special, the Ariki Safari Tent is the most romantic of all, with a clawfoot bath under the stars and a bottle of sparkling wine on arrival. Ikurangi also features two pretty Tropical Ares (meaning 'home') nestled in the lush gardens overlooking the pawpaw plantation. High ceilings and traditional woven materials blend with crisp bedding and simple but colourful furnishings to create an inviting studio-style room opening onto a private deck with views to the mountains.
Breakfast is delivered to your tent or Are each morning with a mouth-watering selection of tropical fruit, granola, breads, homemade coconut yoghurt and refreshing fruit juice; tea and coffee facilities can be found in your room or tent. Tuck into your hearty breakfast as you watch the chickens roam and the palms sway in the light breeze. Whilst there isn't a restaurant at Ikurangi, dinner platters can be arranged and there's a wide array of local cafes, bars and restaurants within easy reach. Luana and Matt, the fabulous owners, will gladly share their recommendations with you. A short stroll, bike ride or taxi journey takes you to a variety of nearby eateries to sample Cook Island dishes and meet the locals.
Take a cooling dip in the saltwater pool, grab a bike from the rack and explore Rarotonga at your own pace, or join a tour to take you further afield. Pa's cross island trek is one not to miss, but if you're looking for something a little more sedate, head to Muri lagoon - just a 5 minute drive or easy cycle ride away - and enjoy the many water activities on offer or relax on the beach. But as most guests will combine a stay at Ikurangi with time at a beach resort or villa, our advice is to sit back on your private deck and soak up Rarotongan nature at its very best. Yoga is a real treat here, and as you breathe in the ocean air and gaze up at Mt Ikurangi (meaning 'the tail of the sky'), you can't help but feel energised and blissfully relaxed at the same time. Take your chilled-out status to a new level with a heavenly massage in the privacy of your tent, and you'll soon agree that tropical island glamping is hard to beat!
