Bear Lodges

Nimmo Bay Resort, Canada

Nimmo Bay is the kind of West Coast lodge that quietly sits in a league of its own. Family-owned and run by the Murray family since 1980, it was born from a desire to bring family life closer to the land. Founders Craig and Deborah Murray traded time apart in the logging industry for a float home towed into this wilderness, and today Nimmo is lovingly stewarded by their son and his wife, Fraser and Becky Murray, who live here with their two daughters during the operating season. That family presence runs through everything and gives the lodge its unmistakable heart. Set in the southern Great Bear Rainforest, one of the world’s largest coastal temperate rainforests, Nimmo Bay feels utterly remote, yet you can be here from Vancouver in under 2 hours. Arrivals are on Mondays and Thursdays and the journey is a one-hour charter flight from Vancouver followed by a scenic 20-minute floatplane landing at the lodge dock. Private floatplanes can also be arranged from Vancouver, Victoria or Tofino. Part floating and part on land, with a waterfall cascading through its centre, Nimmo Bay is small but mighty. An intimate lodge with a vast backyard, where every stay is exclusively tailored to each guest.

Sleep

Dining at Nimmo Bay is exceptional. The kind of food that somehow feels even more impressive because of how remote you are. All meals are included along with select alcohol and menus are built around clean, fresh coastal flavours, sustainably sourced and rooted in place. The aim is simple and beautiful, to tell the story of land and sea through what’s on your plate. Meals are shaped around your adventures, from unhurried breakfasts to celebratory dinners with that warm, cosy lodge vibe. And the setting is part of the magic too. The floating restaurant, Little River, sits right on the bay adjacent to the also floating September Lounge, an indoor-outdoor spot for sundowners around the fire after a big day outside. One of Nimmo’s most memorable experiences is Taste the Wild, where guests can join the chefs for a full day of culinary immersion.

Play

All excursions and enhancements at Nimmo Bay are entirely private and lovingly curated, with the Nimmo team designing each day around your interests, the weather and what nature is offering. Your stay includes a brilliant base mix of guided hiking, kayaking, snorkelling, beachcombing, paddleboarding, yoga, picnics, saunas and hot tubs. From there, you build your own ‘Nimmo magic’ through bespoke day trips by luxury boat or helicopter. The must-do is the Coastal Safari, a full-day wilderness excursion for wildlife spotting, waterfalls, beaches and local villages, with chances to see humpbacks, orca, dolphins, seals, sea lions and black or grizzly bears depending on the season. Heli adventures open up an almost limitless playground of glaciers, alpine lakes, remote rivers and untouched beaches, with fly-fishing at Nimmo’s soulful core. Coho run mid-August to October, pink salmon mid-July to late August and trout or Dolly Varden May to October. Nothing is rushed or pre-planned here. Nimmo follows Mother Nature to her core.

Wildlife Timing

Mid-June to October is best overall to book your stay at Nimmo Bay. Grizzlies tend to peak mid-September to mid-October, humpbacks from mid-July onwards, orca mid-July to mid-September and black bears are around all season long.

PAMPER

Pampering at Nimmo Bay is rainforest-powered and wonderfully elemental. The waterfall that runs through the resort supplies your drinking water and around 80% of the lodge’s natural energy, and at its base you’ll find a natural plunge pool, two cedar-sided hot tubs and an iconic heated outdoor rain shower, touted by the family as one of the best showers in the world. A short paddle or boat ride away sits floating wood-fired saunas and hot tubs, totally hidden from view of the lodge. Back at the lodge there are two wellness spaces for treatments, a yoga studio with daily classes and cosy floating nooks like the Melody Room, filled with instruments for music, reading or quiet time. Start the day with coffee on the deck and end it under star-heavy skies by the fire. Feel your whole system downshift into something calmer, lighter and more connected.
