Berry Island Wilderness Lodge
Great Bear Rainforest

Berry Island Wilderness Lodge, Canada

Set in the heart of British Columbia’s Great Bear Rainforest, Berry Island Wilderness Lodge feels wonderfully removed from the everyday. Life slows to the rhythm of the tides and the wild takes centre stage.

Formerly known as Farewell Harbour Lodge, this much-loved retreat has entered an exciting new chapter under the stewardship of the Gee family, bringing thoughtful enhancements while preserving everything that made it so special. Warm hospitality, exceptional guiding and a deep respect for the surrounding wilderness remain at its core .

Accessible only by boat or seaplane, arriving here is part of the experience. Within minutes, the noise of modern life fades, replaced by breaching whales, forest-lined shores and a sense of true remoteness. Days unfold naturally, shaped around wildlife encounters, coastal exploration and time to simply take it all in.

The lodge sits on Berry Island, perfectly positioned between the Broughton Archipelago and the wider Great Bear Rainforest. This is one of the most biologically rich regions on the planet, where humpback whales, orcas, bears and sea lions are part of daily life. Guided by an expert team, you might kayak through glassy channels, explore by boat or walk beneath towering cedar trees. No two days feel the same, yet each leaves a lasting sense of awe.

Sleep

There are just 12 rooms, split between land and water, each designed to keep the focus on the views beyond.

On land, rooms are warm and inviting with two double beds, gas fireplaces and wide windows framing the harbour. Below, floating rooms sit right on the water’s edge, offering a closer connection to the ocean with queen beds and ever-changing wildlife just beyond your window.

Interiors are simple but beautifully considered. Locally crafted wood, soft neutral fabrics and a relaxed West Coast feel run throughout. Ongoing enhancements to the bedrooms and Great Room are elevating the experience while maintaining its authentic charm.

Eat

Days here are active, and the food more than keeps pace.

Mornings begin with generous breakfasts before you head out on the water. Lunch is often enjoyed picnic-style during your adventures, while evenings are relaxed and sociable, overlooking the harbour as the light softens.

Expect fresh, seasonal dishes showcasing local ingredients, from British Columbian seafood to vibrant salads and comforting classics. Beer and wine are now included with dinner, adding to the ease of those long, golden evenings.

Play

Stays are structured around 3, 4 or 7-night packages with set arrival days, allowing you to fully settle into the rhythm of the lodge. Whether you opt for a shorter stay or a longer immersion, the balance of guided adventure and downtime feels just right .

Days might begin on the water tracking wildlife through the Inside Passage, followed by an afternoon paddle, a forest walk or time spent watching the tides roll in. Each evening brings the chance to plan the next day alongside your guides.

A final highlight comes on departure day, with an extended last experience on the water before returning to Alder Bay.

Getting There

Getting here is more seamless than ever. Guests can choose to arrive into Port Hardy on the morning of their stay, removing the need for an overnight stop. From there, it is a scenic transfer to Alder Bay followed by a short boat journey to the lodge, often with your first wildlife sightings along the way
