The Sanubari, Sumba
Discovered by Christopher Columbus, this former pirates’ haven offers newlyweds a perfect luxury British Virgin Islands honeymoon experience. Made up of over 40 volcanic islands, including Norman Island (thought to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island), the British Virgin Islands are wonderfully sleepy and slow-paced. The majority of islands are nothing more than rocky outcrops or spits of sand, with only around 15 inhabited, including Virgin Gorda, Tortola, Jost Van Dyke and Peter Island.
Home to some of the world’s best resorts, the British Virgin Islands are a fantastic choice for honeymooners looking to combine exclusivity and luxury with a remote, unspoiled location. Tortola may be the largest island, but Virgin Gorda is most geared up to couples. Covering an area of around eight miles, this lush island of gently undulating hills, spectacular beaches and natural rock formations such as the famous Baths National Park is a fabulous honeymoon destination. Moreover, the island is home to a small selection of world-class resorts, well spaced out from one another and offering couples the ultimate in romantic relaxation. It's an ideal spot for your luxury British Virgin Islands honeymoon.
A wonderful place for sailing, swimming, snorkelling and diving, the British Virgin Islands are perfect for water-loving couples. The waters around the islands offer some of the best dive sites in the Caribbean and due to the islands’ location, they enjoys warm, tropical weather that’s perfect for sunbathing.
Relatively remote and hard to reach (there are no direct flights from the US or UK), the British Virgin Islands feel like a special secret to those who visit. Although part of the same archipelago, the BVI have a very different feel to the neighbouring US Virgin Islands and are quieter, less developed and less glitzy. If you’re looking for a slow-paced luxury honeymoon in the BVIs, with idyllic surroundings, then it might just be the choice for you.
The Sanubari, Sumba
Located in the south of the untouched and remote island of Sumba (an hour’s flight from Bali), surrounded by a 100-hectare nature reserve and fronting over two kilometres of white sand beach, the nine simply furnished villas of The Sanubari are minimal in design to make the most of the location. Floor to ceiling windows open out to huge outside spaces, all but one with private pool, steps from the sand. A few of the villas look across the gardens and rice fields beyond. Hand crafted furniture and local artefacts along with local artisan weavings give a sense of place………as does stepping outside to view the pristine paradise! What more could you want? This is simple luxury living and its perfect!
At the centre of the resort is an open sided chillout lounge, a friendly, social space for guests to relax and further along the beach is a simple and rustic tiki bar offering cold beers and cocktails – perfect for sunset. Adjacent to this the main restaurant serves up a mix of delicious western and Indonesian dishes using sustainable fresh ingredients, many grown on site, and the pool commands the perfect spot with jaw dropping views from each of the sun loungers.
The Sanubari team, mostly from the local villages are incredibly friendly, gracious and can’t do enough for you. This is the kind of place where you are greeted as family and encouraged to just kick back and embrace all that’s special about Sanubari and Sumba. If you can tear yourselves away from the beach or pool, a number of activities are on offer. Firstly, the resort has its own stables where the horses are lovingly taken care of in beautiful stables – imagine galloping down the beach at sunset or swimming with the horses! They’ll also take you to one of the island’s most beautiful waterfalls or visit a local village and learn about life in this remote corner of the world.
