Bask in sun-soaked intimacy at Thanda Island
Southern Tanzania

Thanda Island, Tanzania

Nestled within Tanzania’s Shungi Mbili Island Marine Reserve, Thanda Island offers eight hectares of exclusive, sumptuous private island living in the midst of the Indian Ocean. Just a 40-minute helicopter ride from Dar Es Salaam off the east coast of Africa, this is one of the few truly exclusive private islands in the world. With just one elegant private villa consisting of five-bedroom suites and two rustic Tanzanian Bandas, the whole island is yours for the taking! If you are a group of families or friends travelling together, it makes this exclusive private island great value for money. Ten years in the making, owners Christin and Dan Olofsson set about transforming this remote, uninhabited tropical paradise into an idyllic home-from-home experience. Developed with eco-consciousness in mind, the natural environment has been kept as unspoiled as possible.

Thanda Island

The expansive five-bedroom villa sleeps up to 10 adults and 9 children, offering the perfect retreat for family celebrations or larger groups. White wash walls, floor-to-ceiling glass windows and natural wood interiors, the villa style is more minimalist Seychellios than Swahili, but blends seamlessly with the castaway setting. Each suite has an elegant four-poster bed draped with white mosquito nets that step out onto the silken white sand beach. This indoor/outdoor open living area boats a Stenway grand piano, impressive wine cellar, al fresco BBQ, infinity glass rim-flow swimming pool. Kids of all ages will absolutely love the indoor aquarium with sea life to rival what lies beneath the waves! The dedicated team of butlers, chefs and housekeepers will look after your every whim whilst on the island.

Beyond the main house a further eight can sleep in the two traditional Tanzanian Bandas on the island, perfect for families with older children. Beautifully bespoke, the hand-carved furniture from nearby Mafia Island creates a wonderful feeling of Robinson Crusoe Island life, with exquisite vistas to match.

A stay on Thanda Island is a delight for your taste buds. For lovers of seafood you are in for a treat. Join in with the fun and catch your own tuna, crab, seasonal oysters and lobster daily. From breakfast on the beach to bonfire dinners and sandbank picnics, whatever you desire, the island team will deliver. We particularly love the Swahili feast dedicated to the flavours of Tanzania, tickled with spices from Zanzibar.

Surrounded by its own private reef within the Shungi Mbili Marine Reserve you can explore an entire kilometre of world-class diving sites in total seclusion! From October to February, swim with whale sharks as these gentle giants of the ocean congregate just south of the Island. This is also the season to spot the endangered dugong or watch sea turtles nesting. Sailboats, stand up paddleboards, jet skis and kayaks are also available for guests throughout their stay. Visit neighbouring Mafia Island for a fascinating insight into the local way of life and the sea-faring culture; explore its ruins, coconut plantations and lakes as well as the underwater wonders of Chloe bay in Mafia Island Marine Park.

Voted as the World’s Leading Exclusive Private Island by the 2016 World Travel Awards, a stay at Thanda Island is the perfect way to wrap up a safari in Tanzania or neighbouring Kenya.
