Grootbos Private Nature Reserve, South Africa
Less than two hours’ drive south of Cape Town and just half an hour from Hermanus, Grootbos is a superb luxury eco- retreat which overlooks the whale-watching haven of Walker Bay. It enjoys a spectacular elevated setting in an ancient Milkwood forest surrounded by rolling fynbos-clad hills with mountains behind (fynbos is the natural shrubland or heathland vegetation which occurs in this small coastal belt of the Western Cape known as the Gansbaai). The views of the surrounding dunes and ocean are breath-taking – on a clear day, you can see all the way to Cape Point! This ruggedly beautiful southernmost coastal region of South Africa, where the epic Atlantic and Indian Oceans converge, boasts one of the richest and biologically diverse eco-systems in the world, and as such, Grootbos offers a world of untold wonders for the young at heart! The children’s activities are not just activities – they are a combination of education and fun in a wonderful natural environment!
Grootbos Private Nature Reserve
The original Garden Lodge, situated reassuringly close to the activity areas, dining room and swimming pool, offers 11 spacious free-standing suites with separate living areas and vast wraparound decks with sweeping bay views. Choose between one or two bedrooms. Each of the one bedroom suites has a twin sofa bed – ideal for families with smaller children.
Fresh produce grown in the gardens features prominently in the specially designed kiddies’ menu and what’s more, parents can relax over dinner while children enjoy a special braai at the playground followed by a guided night walk to spot frogs, snails and porcupines!
Pony rides in the paddock, horse riding through the reserve, guided tours to ancient coastal caves (home to bushmen) , feeding a piglet and collecting eggs for breakfast from the resident free range chickens are all part of the Grootbos experience for younger guests!
Other activities available include Great White Shark cage diving and adventurous hikes - and at the end of an exhilarating day, you can relax and unwind with a rejuvenating spa treatment in the privacy of your suite!
