ol Donyo Lodge, Kenya

ol Donyo Lodge – a Turquoise favourite - offers a truly extraordinary safari experience, rich in history and conservation. It lies in the spectacular Chyulu Hills in south-east Kenya, in the shadow of Mount Kilimanjaro. Hidden between two National Parks - Tsavo East and Amboseli - the lodge is dramatically set in the heart of a 275,000 acre private ranch, owned by 4,000 Maasai. The ranch is leased from them by Great Plains Conservation (who manage the lodge) and all lease and conservancy fees go directly to the community with the understanding that they will ensure the conservation of the ranch and the wild animals which call it home. The result is an area rich in wildlife - presided over by the magnificent snow-capped summit of Africa's greatest icon. Waking up to breathtaking views of Mount Kilimanjaro is an incredibly invigorating experience at any time, but even more so when you've been sleeping on one of the lodge's unique open-air star-beds, conveniently set on the rooftop of your suite! This is a place of timeless wild beauty where the magic of East Africa is always in the air and the vast African starlit sky is your last view as you drift into slumber.

ol Donyo was founded by the infamous Richard Bonham, a living legend in Kenya, especially in the safari conservation world. He has dedicated his life to wildlife and started the  renowned charity, The Big Life Foundation - a conservation charity created to protect Africa’s wildlife against poaching. When he's there, Richard will gladly take guests out in his private plane for a scenic flight over Kilimanjaro and around the Chyulu Hills – a true once-in-a-lifetime experience. All proceeds from these private guest flights go to the Big Life Foundation.

ol Donyo Lodge

Sleep

The lodge sits on a gently sloping hillside with breathtaking far-reaching views out over the plains towards Kilimanjaro. ol Donyo has been carefully constructed from natural materials - even the cement was used sparingly as a light wash over lava rock. Rainwater is captured from each roof and ends up in the waterholes in front of the lodge which attract a myriad of wildlife. Most of the lodge's energy comes from the sun. There are six Pool Suites - each with a private plunge pool, extraordinary views and a staircase to the overhead starbed area - perfect for optional sleep-outs under the stars! Designed to seamlessly blend indoor and outdoor living, ol Donyo's eclectic style is a distinct mix of contemporary with rustic African chic. Above all else, guests here can be assured of deep immersion in the Kenyan wilderness. It offers a true sense of place where you can learn about the rich culture and history of the people of this area - the indomitable Maasai.

Pamper & Play

Here, you really feel the rhythm of Africa as you walk with expert trackers or travel across open savannahs in a 4x4 safari vehicle. The extensive array of activities includes early morning and late afternoon game drives, guided bush walks, bush breakfasts and dinners, night drives, hiking, horse riding (for all levels from novice to professional), mountain biking, animal tracking and widllife viewing in an open-air hide..... and at the end of an exhilarating day, relax with a massage in the comfort of your suite. Families with children from 5 years and above are welcome.
