NEW ZEALAND'S STUNNING SOUTH ISLAND

Starting at the top of the South Island and ending in Queenstown, this two week self-drive takes in vineyards, whales, rugged mountains, azure lakes and magnificent fiords - all with the accompaniment of exquisite accommodation, wonderful hosts and gorgeous suites with spectacular views.

  • Days 1-3 Marlborough Lodge, Blenheim

Your journey starts at the top of the South Island in the delightful town of Blenheim (fly here from Auckland after your international arrival - or add this itinerary to a North Island trip for a complete New Zealand extravaganza!)  Surrounded by glorious vineyards and a short drive from the picturesque Marlborough Sounds, Blenheim is a wonderful place to relax and settle into Kiwi life. Collect your car and drive the short distance to The Marlborough Lodge - a boutique retreat just 10 minutes from Blenheim. This is the perfect base from which to explore this famous wine-making region and a fabulous introduction to the South Island.

Stay: 3 nights at The Marlborough Lodge, Blenheim

  • Days 4-6 Hapuku Lodge, Kaikoura

A scenic two hour drive takes you to Kaikoura where Hapuku Lodge will be your home for the next three nights. (Note - the coastal road from Picton to Kaikoura will be closed until late 2017 due to earthquake damage. There's a 7 hour inland route, or take a light aircraft flight to Kaikoura, or a helicopter straight to your lodge!)  Flanked by a rugged mountain range on one side and the vast Pacific Ocean on the other, the views from your Tree House at Hapuku Lodge are simply breathtaking. Dining here is a real treat. Fiona, a finalist on NZ's Masterchef, creates mouthwatering dishes using local ingredients and freshly caught seafood. Hapuku is just a short drive from Kaikoura, where a 'must' is a trip onboard a whale watching boat - or swim with dolphins if you're feeling adventurous!

Stay: 3 nights at Hapuku Lodge near Kaikoura

  • Days 7-9 Otahuna Lodge, Near Christchurch

Continue south today and stop for a wander around the delightful city of Christchurch. Just a 25 minute drive south of the city, Otahuna Lodge sits in beautiful surroundings with an ancient volcano as a backdrop. Lovingly restored, this peaceful retreat is an idyllic hideaway where you can re-charge your batteries. Wander around the charming grounds, savour delicious cuisine, swim in the outdoor pool or simply relax and enjoy the peace and tranquility.

Stay: 3 nights at Otahuna Lodge near Christchurch

  • Days 10-13 Matakauri Lodge, Queenstown

Drive to Christchurch airport today and take the short flight to Queenstown where your next hire car will be waiting for you. Just a 7 minute drive out of vibrant Queenstown, this luxury lodge sits above the shoreline of Lake Wakatipu with unsurpassable views of the lake and surrounding mountains. It's tempting to sit on your private balcony with a glass of local Pinot Noir and marvel at the glorious view all day, but be sure to tear yourself away as there is so much to do in the Queenstown area.

Vineyards, jetboating, 4WD tours across the rugged terrain, a lake cruise, sheep station tours, native bush walks, white water rafting and nearby Arrowtown are on your doorstep. Don't miss the sensational views from the top of Queenstown's gondola, and we highly recommend a trip to Doubtful Sound or Milford Sound. Queenstown is a hive of activity day and night, with plenty of wonderful restaurants and bars.

Stay: 4 nights at Matakauri Lodge near Queenstown

  • Day 14 - Home

Time to leave Queenstown and head back to Auckland to connect with your international flight back to the UK, or hop over to the North Island for more adventures!

  • Take me there

Prices from £11,545 per person based on 13 nights accommodation as above. Includes car hire, domestic flights and international flights.
