Sukau Rainforest Lodge, Borneo

Sukau Rainforest Lodge, Borneo

Situated on the banks of the Kinabatangan River, Sukau Rainforest Lodge pits you right in the heart of one of the greatest concentrations of wildlife in Borneo. Orangutan, proboscis monkeys, pygmy elephants, crocodiles and silver leaf langurs are just some of the animals you can see here. What’s more, they’re free to come and go around the lodge, so it wouldn’t be unusual to see a wild orangutan or a monkey swinging in the trees near your room.

Sukau has been ensuring it’s putting the fragile nature of the Kinabatangan River first ever since it was built in 1995, employing ecotourism principles with everything they do and most of its staff coming from local tribes. The lodge also adds a splash of luxury to such a remote location, with its villas gorgeously decorated and, most importantly, having large outside verandas so you can sit back and watch the wildlife in its natural habitat.

Sukau Rainforest Lodge

Sleep

The lodge and its rooms are all in keeping with their wild surrounds, made from natural woods and decorated with locally made textiles.

The lodge’s 20 superior rooms are clean, simple and act is the perfect base for somewhere where you’ll spend most of your time outside exploring. However, if you want to add some luxury to your jungle experience, we’d highly recommend upgrading to one of its 20 Borneo villas, which are beautifully designed and include a generously sized outside decking area so you can carry on watching the wildlife while you’re relaxing.

Eat

The open-air Melapi Restaurant is buffet style and offers simple and fresh selection of traditional Malaysian cuisine. Its location is spectacular, with excellent views over the river. The Gecko Lounge & Bar is a great place to relax after a river safari or your dinner if you fancy another drink or one of its cocktails.

Play

Exploring the jungle is the main attraction here. Guided river boat safaris mean you can witness the area’s extraordinary wildlife up close, with two cruises each day – one in the morning and the other in the afternoon. Spy wildlife such as wild orangutans, langurs, proboscis monkeys, hornbills, kingfishers and pygmy elephants.

Back at the lodge, its Hornbill and Attenborough boardwalks (the iconic naturalist once stayed here) weave through the jungle, which you can wander at your leisure for more opportunities to spot the animals which roam this wilderness. Guided night walks also give you a different perspective on the rainforest, with expert naturalists showing you some of its nocturnal creatures. In short, if it’s good enough for David Attenborough, it’s good enough for us!
