The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino
Gloriously under-the-radar, the Peloponnese peninsula is one of mainland Greece’s greatest secrets. With more than 4,500 years of history, countless monuments and an abundance of natural beauty, the region is a blissfully uncrowded alternative to the better-known Greek islands. Just 45 minutes from Kalamata Airport, the beautiful south-west region of the Peloponnese, known as Messinia, is home to Costa Navarino. It is a childhood dream fulfilled for one local man, Captain Vassilis. Born in 1935 in the small village of Diavolitsi, he loved Messinia and dreamt of putting it on the global travel map. After years working at sea, encouraged by his wife Carmen, he took out a loan to buy a small ship and established Costamare Shipping Company, a venture that proved hugely successful. But despite this, he held on to the boyhood dream and in the early Eighties, began acquiring land, planting the seeds of Costa Navarino. Today, that dream is a reality, one that has been taken on by his son Achilles and celebrates all that Captain Vassilis loved and believed in: sustainability (he was an environmental activist ahead of his time) and a whole-hearted celebration of the beauty, culture, history, and hospitality of his beloved Messinia. Sweeping the stunning Ionian coastline and surrounded by a sun-drenched olive-dotted countryside, there is little doubt the effortless charm of this region will enchant you. Costa Navarino comprises several hotels and The Westin is the luxury family friendly resort which overlooks the white sands of Dunes Beach and offers an abundance of fun activities.
The Westin Resort, Costa Navarino
Farm-to-table cuisine is a hallmark of the dining experience at Costa Navarino. Fresh, organically grown ingredients and a devotion to authentic gourmet cuisine ensures that your culinary journey pays tribute to the region's age-old recipes, treasured for their health benefits and handed down through generations of Peloponnese families. Choose from a wealth of restaurants, bars and pool bars dotted throughout the Costa Navarino resort but also take time to discover traditional home-style fare in the local Messinian tavernas and seaside restaurants.
Inspired in design by old Messinian mansions in the local villages, the Greek architects have created a space that carefully respects the surrounding landscape. Low-rise buildings carved out of Peloponnese stone take full advantage of the glorious beachfront setting. Seaside elegance prevails in each of the 445 spacious family rooms and suites (many on the ground floor have individual infinity pools). All have either garden or sea views from their terrace or balcony. The suites have a king bedroom, living area with double sofabed, space for an extra bed and two bathrooms (suitable for a family of 2 adults and 3 children under 12 years) whilst the rooms can sleep up to 3 people sharing (3 adults or 2 adults and 1 child).
This is a place to relax, recharge and discover a unique cultural heritage. Become acquainted with local Messinian traditions through cooking classes, olive harvesting and grape picking - you can even join in old-fashioned grape stomping! There are two kids clubs, swimming pools, a tennis centre, indoor and outdoor sports area with climbing wall and football pitches, two 18-hole golf courses, an Aqua Park with waterslides, a fitness studio and a superb award-winning Spa. Collect seasonal produce from the vegetable garden for a Messinian picnic, go fishing and hiking around the lagoon or explore the nearby village of Pylos and enjoy lunch in a local taverna.
