Goatfell, Sri Lanka
At Goatfell, it’s tea time – all the time. Repurposing a century-old former estate manager’s bungalow, few locations reveal Sri Lanka’s Tea Country in all its glory like Goatfell. Sit on the terrace with a fresh brew overlooking a 6,500ft-high pea-green panorama of the tea bushes of the working Concordia Estate and the hills of Badulla in the distance, the latter looking particularly spectacular first thing as the morning mist hugs the peaks. With it being hidden away in the Tea Country’s hills and having only four rooms, Goatfell boasts absoluter tranquillity and seclusion. Each room channels the bungalow’s feel of a bygone era, with colonial period furnishings, snug-looking carpets and rugs and earthy colours reminiscent of your surroundings. The plush four-poster beds and hot water bottles are welcome additions with Goatfell’s lofty position meaning nights can be chilly. Maps of walking and cycling trails through neighbouring tea estates are readily available at the hotel so you can go off and explore the countryside, taking a picnic with you for a lovely lunch with a view. You can also visit a tea factory, wander the sights of Nuwara Eliya’s colonial hill station and hike through the cloud forests of Horton Plains National Park.
