Kahanda Kanda
Kahanda Kanda… your Sri Lankan home in the hills and a one stop jungle oasis in which to rejuvenate the mind, body and soul. Lily pond pathways and troupes of friendly monkeys will guide you around this boutique hillside hideaway, overlooking low lying tea plantations, Kogalla Lake and the south west coast beyond. Ten individually designed, stand-alone Suites provide guests with the perfect blend of a private villa and luxury hotel experience, with exceptional service, stunning cuisine and five star facilities.
Kahanda Kanda
A shrine to Sri Lankan art, antiques and time worn tomes spanning the works of infamous writers from around the globe, Kahanda Kanda is a treasure trove to behold. Sensitive to its location in every manor, each Suite’s collection of furnishings has been carefully curated by interior designer and owner George Cooper, to give guests a truly unique insight into Sri Lankan heritage. Three of the Suites (Hibiscus, Hellaconia and Dubu) boast private swimming pools and for this reason they come top of the Turquoise list. For honeymooners and couples, the Dubu Suite gets our vote. The antique ‘Jogo House’ was imported from Java after Cooper and his team fell in love with its elaborately carved wooden ceilings and frame. Located furthest from the main house it is the most private Suite, complete with outdoor bathroom, private infinity pool and views over Koggala Lake. Although the resort doesn’t take children under 12, older families and groups will love the Tea and Garden Suites adjoined by a large veranda, accommodating up to six people.
Spot the tropical fish darting amongst the lily pads whilst being serenaded by chirping cicadas and wild peacock’s as you dine in Kahanda Kanda’s restaurant. The hotel is set within its own private 12-acre estate so you can expect picked-that-day fruit and vegetables alongside caught-that -day seafood from the local fishing village of Habaraduwa. The menu is refreshingly healthy yet reassuringly indulgent should you want it to be… a delicious fusion of Thai colour and spice alongside Sri Lankan curry and rice! For morning coffee and afternoon cocktails The Lounge Pavilion bar serves a wonderful array of locally inspired tipples – a post dinner arrack infused digestif is a must!
Kahanda Kanda provides a truly peaceful and tranquil escape, especially from within the cool white washed walls of its plantation style spa pavilion…. complete with Ayurvedic inspired treatments and therapies. For those who feel they cannot relax one moment more, fear not… spend a day aboard a traditional fishing boat on Kogalla lake, taking in the smells of Spice Island, the sites of Bird Island and serenity of Talathudwa Temple Island. Late afternoon wander through the charming Kahanda village and visit the local tea factory for a whistle-stop tour and cup of the finest Sri Lankan brew. The ancient city of Galle is 20 minutes by car (30 by tuk tuk) and a wonderful maze of cobbled streets steeped in history, lined with boutique shops, wine bars and art galleries. Borrow a bicycle for the day and head to the coast (downhill on the way – uphill on the way back!), stopping off at the stunning Wijaya beach for a swim, KK Beach (Kahanda Kanda’s sister property) for lunch and Talpe Beach Club for sundowners. NB. The Kahanda Kanda team will come and collect you, your loved ones and your bicycle should the cocktail list and sunset be too inviting to leave…
