LUX* Grand Gaube, Mauritius

Mauritius is one of the first islands that springs to mind when you think about the classic beach retreat experience. Resting sleepily on Mauritius' northern coast, LUX* Grand Gaube is the tropical escape you had probably been imagining but it does far more than tick the 'sun, sea and sand' boxes. It grabs your attention from the moment you arrive and set eyes on its pair of secluded coves. This is languid island living at its finest, where the pace of your stay will go no faster than the gentle sway of palms which speckle the sandy bays.

It's an easy-going tempo mirrored in the neighbouring fishing village of the same name but the eclectic nature of the resort means it doesn't always move to the same beat: there's something here for everyone. Live music and DJs at its restaurants and bars speed up the rhythm of island life, while LUX* Grand Gaube masters the art of balancing sophistication with an informal atmosphere. This is best shown in the thatch-topped rooms, all born out of the creative mind of British designer Kelly Hoppen. They're refined in their whitewashed walls and drapes of bougainvillea à la Mediterranean, while a diverse mix of vintage furniture and potted plants bring the informality. Each room is also sea-facing, taking full advantage of the resort's position presiding over the Indian Ocean.

LUX* Grand Gaube's retro-chic style of living is easy to fall in love with and its unhurried ambience is exactly how an island retreat should be. And as you're lying there looking out across the Indian Ocean, you can't fail to raise a smile as wide as the very bay you're relaxing on.

Highlights

LUX* Grand Gaube

Sleep

The resort's diverse character shines through in its mix of rooms suites and villas. All are spacious, open-plan and, most importantly, are angled towards the sea for incredible views –you'll have your own furnished terrace or balcony from which to admire them.

Inside, British designer Kelly Hoppen has waved her visionary wand with their whitewashed walls and curtains and bougainvillea emitting Mediterranean vibes. Around your accommodation you'll find African woven baskets, vintage rattan furniture and ceramic potted succulents, while the bathrooms are bedecked in vibrant geometric tiles.

It's an eclectic theme that is replicated around the entire resort, from the liberal use of greenery to the trendy Gouzou scribbles by French street artist Jace and beachside murals by Camille Walala.

Eat

If you're a foodie, you'll be in paradise at LUX* Grand Gaube. Around the resort there are six restaurants and seven bars, so you won't be found wanting in the variety department.

The Palm Court is its main restaurant and overlooks one of the resort's pools. Here, dishes from around the world are cooked right before your eyes with its exciting live cooking stations, so expect your tastebuds to be transported to the Mediterranean at its tapas bar and as far as Southeast Asia. Beach Rouge pairs relaxed toes-in-the-sand dining with music from its resident DJ, making it the liveliest spot for lunch or dinner at the resort.

Where LUX* Grand Gaube really comes into its own is its disparate range of restaurants to choose from. With Inti, Mauritius' first Latin American restaurant, the resort shows it isn't afraid of pushing the boundaries with its cuisine offering and its menu blends influences from Peru, Argentina, Mexico and Ecuador – we particularly adore the ceviche. Elsewhere, the mezzes and kebabs you can order at Bodrum Blue are inspired by the Turkish coastline, while Banyan is a range of dining experiences set under the gaze of its namesake tree. Beneath its branches you could be eating at a Creole smokehouse, chowing down at a burger shack, trying one (or several) of 88 different types of rum or sipping cocktails freshly prepared in a Citroen H van.

Beyond the Banyan, there are experience mixologists waiting to craft your perfect refreshment at Palm Court's own bar, the G&T 100 Club is the place to be for your ideal sunset beverage and Café LUX*'s roasted blends are a great way to start the day. If you have a sweet tooth that needs satisfying at any point during your stay head to ICI, where homemade flavours range from Sicilian pistachio variegato to bubblegum and are served in freshly baked waffle cones. Yum!

Play

If you can tear yourself away from the two caramel-coloured beaches, the resort's pair of pools give you plenty of opportunities to soak up the resort's gorgeous oceanfront location. And if you can peel yourself off the sunlounger (or if your feet are beginning to itch), then LUX* Grand Gaube's comprehensive water sports centre make stand-up paddleboarding, kayaking and windsurfing, plus much more, thrilling ways to explore the Indian Ocean. Catamaran and glass-bottom boat trips make for more leisurely ways to spend a few hours on the water.

The sandy bays at LUX* Grand Gaube aren't just for sunbathing. There's beach volleyball and bocci (a game similar to bowls), with table tennis, tai chi classes and other sports you can try during your stay. The resort even has bicycles for hire, so you can pedal to the neighbouring village or the busy local market at Goodlands. If you want to pretend you're Rafael Nadal on holiday, the resort's four synthetic grass courts give you the perfect canvas to perfect game, with private coaching available so you can really feel like the Spanish maestro. Talking of sports, LUX* Grand Gaube also has exclusive access to the 18-hole Mont Choisy Golf Club, designed by renowned South African architect Peter Matkovich. If you're searching for something more 'wow', you won't be disappointed.

There are several unique experiences to do at LUX* Grand Gaube, including a private island-hopping adventure on a wooden pirogue or a barbecue picnic on Île au Bernaches. However, the most sensational is a spot for you and your loved one aboard its own two-seater LUX* Air seaplane or helicopter, where flights over the Indian Ocean will have you spotting turtles.

For families, the Play kids' club is suited to children aged three to 11 years old. There's an an outdoor space filled with activities, while a daily programme will keep little ones busy with crab hunting, Creole fashion shows, fishing lessons, treasure hunts and more. Kids aged 12-17 aren't left out and there are plenty of excursions organised for them as well, including water polo, pedalo competitions, yoga initiations and more.

Pamper

The team at LUX* Grand Gaube know how important it is for their guests to relax during their stay, which is why there are areas dotted around the resort for meditation, yoga (initiations and lessons are also available) and stretching exercises.

Its LUX* Me Spa is a sprawling sanctuary of 12 treatment rooms and African-inspired healing huts where a plethora of treatments use organic aromatherapy oils created by therapist Shirley Page. There are three pools here to relax in – one cold, one ambient and one heated whirlpool. You'll realise the resort's spa is more akin to a mini city of wellness, with the addition of a sauna, steam room, nail salon, barbers and hair salon, as well as a boutique where you can buy Kerastase and Carita products used in the treatments.
