Lisu Lodge, Chiang Mai
Approximately 50 minutes north of Chiang Mai, amidst lush countryside and paddy fields, lies Lisu Lodge, a community-based project built to support and conserve the natural heritage of the surrounding hill tribe communities. Named after the neighbouring Lisu Village, guests will have the unique opportunity to learn, understand and experience traditional Thai culture, food and hospitality. The lodge is staffed by those from the Lisu Village community, with tours and activities all run by local operators or members of staff and their families. Responsible tourism is paramount here, with the focus being upon connecting guests and locals, learning about foreign culture and tradition, in a sustainable and eco-friendly manner.
In line with the overall concept of Lisu Lodge, accommodation is traditional and simply designed, albeit with all the required modern comforts and splashes of vibrant Thai fabrics throughout. There are 20 en-suite guest rooms in total, overlooking the fields, gardens and valley beyond. Inter-connecting rooms offer families the opportunity to easily stay, eat and play together.
The food at Lisu Lodge is sure to be some of the most authentic you’ll taste in Thailand. The majority of which is sourced locally or grown in the lodge’s organic vegetable garden. Depending on which experiences you decide to book, you may find yourself cooking your own dinner one evening and enjoying a freshly prepared Thai feast the next, accompanied by traditional Thai dancing, courtesy of the Lisu villagers. All meals are included within your stay at Lisu Lodge.
Whilst visiting Lisu Lodge is an experience in itself, most guests will book a combination of tours and activities to enjoy throughout their stay. There are a number of options available, including day hikes into the hills, visits to Araksa Tea Garden and Himmapaan Tree Nursery, bamboo river rafting down the Mae Tang River, learning the art of rice making and our favourite, a traditional Thai cookery class. Although cookery lessons are available in abundance throughout Thailand, here you will learn the secrets of the founding five flavours of Thai cuisine and the nutritional benefits of their combinations. Those who wish can also take a second cookery course, which focuses on the history of rice cultivation and perfecting the art of Thai sticky rice! A two-night stay should allow most guests to experience the very best of Lisu Lodge and all it has to offer.
