White Sand, Zanzibar

White Sand, Zanzibar

This family-owned, award-winning, barefoot haven is set on one of the most beautiful strips of sand on Zanzibar’s southeast coast. The resort’s name is entirely dictated by its setting on the white sandy beachfront of Paje – over 200m long, this seemingly never-ending flat strip of sand couldn’t be more pristine. However, White Sand Zanzibar has far more to showcase than its picture-perfect beach. The coast is renowned for its gentle waves, warm turquoise waters and long sections of shallows lending itself perfectly to Kayakers and Kitesurfers. Beyond the fine sand, you’ll be surrounded by the multicoloured exotic flowers in the tropical beachfront garden. Set within four hectares of lush land, there was more than enough room to build a multitude of villas, but for the owners, the guest’s experience was paramount. As a result, they opted to build just shy of a dozen villas to guarantee a private feel and peaceful stay. They’re similarly committed to ecological responsibility; not only is the resort seamlessly blended into its surroundings, but it also proudly takes the crown for the most sustainable eco-resort in the country. Impressively, these are the first luxury villas in East Africa to be powered entirely by solar and wind. If you’re after relaxed, private and mindful luxury – White Sand Zanzibar needs to be on your ‘to-visit’ list!

White Sand

Sleep

The fifteen villas are nestled among the lush tropical greenery and bright-blooming flowers for complete secrecy and ensure an intimate and personalised experience. Their architecture harnesses the local environment using organic materials, shapes and textures. The traditional palm roofs and sun-bleached timbers mimic the villas found in a rustic fishing village. All of the hotel’s furniture is made onsite in a workshop, supporting Zanzibar’s local craft community. We recommend the one-bedroom beachfront villas for couples, as they’re unbeatable! Made of two buildings, the larger one is home to the bedroom and bathroom and fit with an outdoor bathtub and shower. On the roof, you’ll find a spacious terrace to relax, soaking up the sea views on the day bed. In the second, smaller, thatched-roof building is the living and dining area. To top it all off, joining the two spaces is a large sun deck and private pool. If it doesn’t sound like heaven already, it will do once you discover that each villa has an assigned butler to cater to your every whim.

Eat

The easterly-facing resort is situated perfectly for sunrise, and without a doubt, your mornings must start with a pre-breakfast glass of champagne hosted by the hotel, completed with hot drinks and pastries at the break of day. With sustainability at the heart of the resort, the Swahili-influenced dishes are made using fresh, locally sourced ingredients and the vegetables are grown on-site. For Lunch, you can relax at the Beach Restaurant with bistro flair overlooking the cerulean beach and savour fresh seafood, barbecues, fresh, crunchy salads and vibrant smoothies. In a full-circle moment, your day will draw to a close with a toast to the sunset on the rooftop champagne bar before descending to dinner at the Doors to Zanzibar Restaurant. This elegant fine-dining restaurant welcomes guests for an à la carte dinner menu in the high-ceilinged room centred around a magnificent chandelier. The gourmet dining offer capitalises on Zanzibar’s spice farms, with dishes such as saffron-dusted tiger prawns and fragrant fish curries.

Pamper & Play

Out on the beach and beyond, there’s plenty to fill your day, whether you want to get your heart pumping or unwind. The crystal-clear water is excellent for snorkelling, but it’s worth heading out on the hotel’s boat to the reef for the most memorable experience. The southeast coast’s tiny waves make it one of the world’s best Kitesurfing hotspots. The resort’s kitesurfing school is open from mid-June to mid-September and again from mid-December to mid-March. Alternatively, you can make the most of the serene coast in a less high-octane fashion and explore on a complimentary crystal kayak or Fat Tyre eclectic beach bicycle. On land, get a rally going on the tennis court or work up a sweat at the outdoor gym. Those who like something a little less fast-paced can switch off in the open-air spa, where you’ll feel the warm sea breeze as the therapist completes your desired treatment. If the sea breeze is not your thing, Masseurs will also happily come to your room. There’s a hammam, Jacuzzi and Sauna alongside the two treatment spaces. To enhance your experience to the fullest, participate in the programme of complimentary activities throughout the week ranging from yoga to movie nights, cooking classes or Swahili and cultural lessons.
