Mnemba Island, Zanzibar

A mere 20 minute boat ride off Zanzibar’s north-east coast, Mnemba Island offers one of those rare and elusive holy grail of travel experiences! An out-of-this-world barefoot private island paradise, it revels in its heavenly exclusivity, afforded to just 26 privileged guests at any one time. Be prepared to wade ashore in the shallow Indian Ocean waters as you arrive at this tiny untouched atoll – there isn’t a jetty so discard your shoes and dress accordingly! Even the staff go barefoot. Perhaps best described as a Robinson Crusoe eco-chic idyll, Mnemba takes castaway living to a whole new level. A swathe of blinding soft white sand defines the island’s one mile circumference and the surrounding coral reefs boast some of Africa’s most magnificent dive sites.

Highlights

Mnemba Island

Sleep

Barefoot rustic-luxe at its best, your island refuge is one of 12 ensuite beachside Bandas (including one Family Banda) whose curved shape resembles a nautilus seashell. Each one spills out on to the white coral sand beach from under the dappled shade of the tropical casuarina pine forest. All have been carefully positioned to offer the utmost privacy with uninterrupted ocean views whilst the open design allows the sea breezes to waft through! Dusky pink hues pay homage to the ocean's precious coral. Each Banda has a comfortable daybed, sun loungers and an alfresco shower, not to mention the personal butler on hand to ensure your every wish is fulfilled! Pure relaxation is the keynote here - kick off your shoes and embrace the barefoot escapism - there's even a footbath outside your Banda to wash off the sand!

Eat

Mnemba's island-inspired meals celebrate the bounty of the ocean! Meals are served in a variety of alfresco locations - on the beach, under the forest trees or in the privacy of your Banda. Almost everything is included from all meals, soft drinks, house wines, local brand spirits and beers to most experiences too. Your Banda and Beach Lounge has a personal bar and tea and coffee area, stocked with a selection of drinks plus delicious beach bites. The vibrant Beach Bar is the heart of the island and the perfect spot to sip one of Mnemba's signature cocktails while enjoying convivial conversation with other guests. At night, your kerosene lamp will light the way along the beach to your table under the star-strewn sky where the waves will gently lap at your feet.

Play

The calm warm waters around Mnemba are a giant aquatic playground and boast a wealth of marine life. The snorkelling and diving are sensational and Mnemba has its own dive centre. The island is also a significant breeding site for green turtles and it has also become a sanctuary for two unique antelope species - Ader's duiker and the suni antelope. Learn about the incredible conservation work taking place at the Discovery Centre or soothe your soul with wellness and holistic experiences - there are daily yoga classes, meditation sessions and a range of relaxing treatments to leave you feeling refreshed and restored. Watersports include snorkelling, diving (two dives per day for PADI certified divers), stand-up paddle boarding, sea kayaking, hobie sailing and sunset dhow cruises. Mnemba is all about the sea and the beach but ultimately, the tempo of the day is yours to choose.
