Marataba Mountain Lodge, South Africa
The essence of this fully solar-powered, Scandi-style safari lodge is its exclusive location. Secluded in the malaria free Marakele National Park, a vast private concession in the foothills of South Africa's Waterberg Mountains, Marataba Mountain Lodge is the perfect place to disconnect from the outside world. The lodge has just five private eco suites, all of which open out to the wilderness. There is also an opportunity to sleep out under the African stars at Marataba's unique Thabametsi Treehouse - there's no better place to feel the connection with this stunning landscape. This area is renowned for its magnificent scenery and superb wildlife and is perfectly suited to those seeking solitude amidst the wilds of Africa. This is where busy people come to reconnect with nature - a remote outpost offering peace and space in abundance, yet only 3.5 hours drive from Johannesburg. You can explore the contrasting mountain landscapes, grass-clad hills and deep valleys of the Marakele Park by vehicle and on foot. The lodge stands as a privileged perch from which to take in the wilderness whilst the eco-friendly operation and design ensures it has very little impact on it. Wastewater is treated and re-used for the garden and all guests receive a personalised metal water bottle which can be refilled at one of the purified water stations (still and sparkling). Eco-friendly paper laundry bags are also used.
Marataba Mountain Lodge
This modern, minimalistic yet open lodge has just five stunning Eco Suites, each of which is a haven with a net-draped king bed, incredible private viewing deck (views don’t get any better than this), a fireplace and an ensuite bathroom complete with rain dance shower. Every element, down to the finishes and soft furnishings, has taken its cue from the earth, serving to merge each suite with its pristine environment. For romantics, adventurers and solitude seekers alike, Marataba's Thabametsi Treehouse (a wilderness drive from the lodge) sets you up for a night in Africa you’ll never forget! Built on a raised deck, this solar-powered hideout ensures you feel swathed in the African landscape. Arrive at sunset to a picnic feast, spend the dusk hours spotting wildlife on the plains, and fall asleep to the sounds of Africa beneath an inky blue canopy of stars. You’ll be perfectly safe, with your guide on call. Quality time with nature just doesn't get much better than this.
Free from outside distractions, how much or how little you do at Marataba Mountain Lodge is entirely up to you. Naturally, safari is one of the draws but the experience here is not just about the wildlife. For Big Five enthusiasts, we suggest you tick off your animals at a safari lodge in the Madikwe Game Reserve first (one of our favourites is Sanctuary Makanyane Safari Lodge) and then head here (following a road journey through the bush) for some back-to-nature wilderness solitude. Of course, you can enjoy traditional twice daily game drives and after-breakfast bush walks, and you also take a walk on the wild side on a specialist Marataba Trails hike through this awe-inspiring landscape (the only trails of their kind in a Big Five reserve) or go hippo spotting on a sunset cruise on the Matlabas River aboard Marataba's 'Miss Mara' specialist water safari vessel .....but between the safaris… aside from indulging in a spa treatment on your private deck ....this is a place to just be! The living spaces have been designed to immerse you in the moment, whether you are floating in the Rock Pool overlooking Waterfall Valley or stargazing from the firepit lounge. A stay here provides an opportunity to slow down and form a deeper, more intimate connection with nature as you investigate the smaller, no less fascinating, creatures and plants, often missed when out on exhilarating game drives!
On safari at Marataba, dining is an adventure in itself. Familiar dishes are given an exotic twist, local delicacies provide a taste of South Africa, while on-location feats add an element of surprise!
