Madikwe Lelapa Safari Lodge, South Africa

Located in the lesser-known Madikwe Game Reserve, one of South Africa’s premier game viewing regions which runs along the border with Botswana, Lelapa enjoys an exceptional setting in a prime wildlife viewing area. This is Big Five territory and what’s more, it is malaria free which is a real draw. Access is via a four hour drive or a one hour scenic flight from Johannesburg. Be prepared to pack soft bags if planning to take the flight and you’ll enjoy fabulous aerial views on your journey into the bush. Aircraft can sometimes be delayed due to animals obstructing the runway! This is all part of the adventure! The Madikwe has a very distinct topography comprising vast plains of open woodlands and grasslands, bordered by mountains in the south and dotted with huge rocky hills.

Lelapa is one of three lodges which make up the Madikwe Safari Lodge portfolio (the other two lodges are Kopano and Dithaba). Family-owned, and respectful of the surrounding natural environment in its construction, Lelapa epitomises contemporary African design and yet the atmosphere is wonderfully laid-back. It caters equally well for both couples and families alike, with superb guiding and a passionate team keen to share their love of the African bush with you. The Madikwe is an all-year-round safari destination roamed by an astonishing array of animals.

Sleep

There’s certainly no need to ‘rough it’ in the wilderness! Lelapa has twelve suites, all with a distinct 'out-in-the-bush' chic style. Each suite is wonderfully spacious (approx. 100 square metres) with indoor and outdoor showers, a private plunge pool on the outside deck with views over the reserve, a wood-burning fireplace, double bed (convertible to twins), air-conditioning, a ceiling fan and ensuite bathroom. The four Family Suites have a second bedroom with bunk beds and there’s also a sleeper couch in the living area.

Nothing quite compares with your first sighting of an animal in the wild! The amazement at seeing giraffe, elephant and zebra close-up is heart-stopping and nowhere more so than at Lelapa. Going out on safari here is just magical. The guides are exceptionally knowledgeable and all have a genuine desire to ensure that your adventure in the wild is truly memorable! Morning and afternoon game drives are all part of the experience and provide an opportunity to appreciate the vastness and diversity of the Madikwe's landscapes and wildlife.

After an exhilarating day on safari, indulge your body with a relaxing massage and drift off to the sounds of the bush.

For families, Lelapa have a kids menu of safari activities. Family safari drives include bush orientation, whilst back at the lodge, children can bake in the kitchen, make pizzas in the boma and enjoy star gazing under the African night sky. Lelapa's ECO House is an educational centre built specifically for children and here, kids can paint, draw, make location-specific models and be introduced to some of the live specimens from the reserve!

There’s no denying that childhood storybook tales come alive from the seat of a safari vehicle and you can be assured that your safari at Lelapa will provide memories you will treasure forever!
