Lake Kivu Serena Hotel, Rwanda

Looking out over the shimmering waters of gigantic Lake Kivu and sitting above a sandy beach, Lake Kivu Serena Hotel is the closest thing to a beach resort that landlocked Rwanda has. However, while there’s golden sands and a lake which is so large it looks more like an ocean, how many beach resorts have steaming volcanoes lording over them? It’s a spectacular setting to say the least. Lake Kivu sits slap-bang in-between Nyungwe Forest National Park and Volcanoes National Park, so the Serena Hotel makes for the ideal spot to recharge on the lake’s quiet banks or among its tropical landscaped gardens.

Highlights

Lake Kivu Serena Hotel

Sleep

Every room and suite has epic views of Lake Kivu, with the Executive Suites boasting their own private verandas so you can sit outside and soak up the lovely vista. Inside, rooms are adorned with Pan-African decor and comfy king-size beds, as well as all the mod-cons you would expect.

Eat

With such great views, the hotel doesn’t want the lovely lake it fronts to escape your glance for a second. That’s why its choice of eateries all have incredible views of Lake Kivu to accompany its traditional Rwandese flavours. Kiyaga Restaurant overlooks the lake and its dishes marry the best of Rwandese, African and international cuisine. For something a little more rustic, Ziwani Café sits right on the hotel’s private beach and is a location like no other for beachside barbecues and a cocktail while watching the sunset. If you’re still thirsty, the Lake View Bar boasts an eclectic range of signature cocktails, as well as more casual dining.

Play

Lake Kivu Serena Hotel is a place that should be enjoyed slowly. You can chill on the beach or go for a dip in Lake Kivu’s gentle ripples – the levels of methane here mean there’s no danger of you swimming with any hippos or crocodiles! Non-motorised water sports like windsurfing and kayaking are also popular. Go for a paddle around sunset to witness the lake’s famous singing fishermen bringing in their daily catch! Aside from that, there’s a number of boat trips that you can take to explore the wider area, including Lake Kivu’s Paradise Islands, local coffee farms and the pretty port of Kibuye.

Pamper

As well as the lake itself, Lake Kivu Serena also has its own swimming pool, which is available for all guests to use. There’s a state-of-the-art gym for those looking to burn off some energy, while the on-site Maisha Spa is excellent.
