- Ol Seki Hemingways Mara Camp, Kenya
Ol Seki Hemingways Mara Camp, Kenya
Perched on a rocky escarpment with far reaching views over the acacia-dotted Mara plains, this intimate tented camp (built on sound eco-friendly principles) is located in the private Naboisho Conservancy - a secluded wilderness which borders the Masai Mara. This area teems with wildlife and what's more, the setting in a private conservancy ensures a more exclusive game viewing experience with a lower density of vehicles than in the main Mara reserve. In addition, as well as the twice daily game drives, Ol Seki offers the chance to enjoy walking safaris, night drives and off-road drives, making the wildlife sightings even more memorable! This is one of our all-time favourite safari camps and it is named after the Ol Seki tree, known in English as the sandpaper tree - a Maasai symbol of peace. In the local Maasai language, Ol Seki means "blessed".
Ol Seki Hemingways Mara Camp
The camp boasts six spacious, stylish and uniquely designed Nina tents which take full advantage of the stunning panorama from their elevated setting on wooden platforms with vast outside decks. They are nestled amongst Cordia and Acacia trees which attract an abundance of wildlife and birds. The interiors are sleekly kitted out in 'Out of Africa' safari-chic muted tones which blend with the beautiful surroundings. Each has a high dome which centres over a double bed, romantically draped in fine linens and all have opening sides so you watch the dawn break over the plains. This is luxury glamping at its African best! In addition, Ol Seki has two exclusive two-bedroomed tented suites - the Simba and Chui suites - perfect for families or friends travelling together. Each comprises two ensuite bedrooms connected by a living and dining area with an outside deck, complete with telescope for star gazing at night! Guests in the suites benefit from their own dedicated team of staff including a private 4x4 game viewing vehicle with a ranger.
The elegant dining and mess tents enjoy equally glorious views and there is also a library tent for quiet reflection. Romantic candlelit dinners, sundowners as the sun sinks behind the horizon and night caps around a roaring camp fire are all part of the experience. Guests in the Simba and Chui suites even have a private bar of their own!
Game is plentiful and you will gain an understanding of the wildlife through the eyes of Ol Seki's knowledgeable guides who are all sourced from the neighbouring Koiyaki Guiding School (one of the principle aims of the school being to train local Maasai in the art of guiding to international standards). A morning's game drive is perfectly balanced with an afternoon visiting a local village for a fascinating insight into the Maasai lifestyle. Bush picnics, sundowners, bush dinners and guided walks through the wilderness are all on offer and you can even listen to tales from a local Ndorobo tribe member about his hunter-gathering days, told from his former cave dwelling below the camp.
Ol Seki is accessible via a scheduled or charter flight from Nairobi to Ol Seki's airstrip.
