- Okavango Explorers Camp
Okavango Explorers Camp
As its name suggests, Okavango Explorers Camp evokes a safari experience reminiscent of exploring the unknown African hinterland in 1920’s style. Superbly positioned at the intersection of the upper Okavango Delta water system and the famed Selinda Spillway, this extraordinary location celebrates the unique combination of two iconic ecosystems which teem with wildlife. This is the spot where Beverly and Dereck Joubert, the camp owners, award-winning filmmakers and National Geographic explorers at large, first set up camp amongst the leadwood trees. They felt as if they were possibly the first people there, maybe on the trail of the legendary explorers, Livingstone and Selous. They paddled and walked the entire region for months, using the camp as their base. This is one of the most remote parts of the private Selinda Reserve and the camp wholly exudes the romantic explorer spirit of yesteryear.
Okavango Explorers Camp
Small and intimate, the camp has just six large traditional safari tents, each one on slightly raised wooden decking with a private verandah. All have an ensuite with flush toilet and shower with hot and cold running water. The canvas is light sand-coloured with netted windows and the beds are mosquito-net draped. Campaign-style furniture and décor features throughout. Each tent is cooled by a fan and there is electric lighting and a writing desk in each too. Yoga mats are provided for keen early morning yogis. This is also the perfect camp for a milestone birthday or family celebration – it can be booked exclusively for a maximum of 12 people in the six tents.
Exploration and adventure are the key notes here. Twice daily game drives in the camp’s custom-built Toyota Land Cruisers, specially designed for wildlife viewing and photography, are all part of the experience, along with guided walks. The vehicles are equipped with fold-down windscreens, raised roofs, photographic bars and multi-plug inverters and each is fully stocked with reference books. The location of this camp has been hand-picked for its access to some of the highest concentration of wildlife in the region. Enjoy moments when the wildlife congregates along the water channels to drink and marvel at the setting of the African sun across wildlife-filled plains. Lion, leopard and wild dogs hunt these parts regularly and there are also good densities of giraffes, buffalo, zebra, eland and rare antelope. At the peak of the dry season in late September, the Selinda Reserve has been known to be home to over 9,000 elephants concentrated along the river system. This is also prime bird-watching country. Canoeing along the channels of the Selinda Spillway provides a completely different and unique perspective on wildlife spotting and safaris will often continue into the night in search of nocturnal species. For fishing enthusiasts, a rod/reel kit is available for those keen to try their cast.
Dining in the African bush or in the camp mess tent by lantern light is always a magical affair. Enjoy three delicious meals a day with all drinks, including imported spirits and Champagne. Meal timings are flexible to suit your needs. Picnic breakfasts and lunches in the bush are often the norm while sundowners celebrated with a G&T as the sun sinks on another African day are always a safari favourite. Safari chats around the firepit with a spot of astronomy provide the perfect end to an exhilarating day on safari.
