The Wonders of Australia (family itinerary)

An exhilarating blend of action and relaxation! See koalas, kangaroos and sea lions on Kangaroo Island (Australia’s Galapagos), drive off-road through the rugged Red Centre, explore the beautiful harbour-front city of Sydney and snorkel amongst the colourful underwater wonders of the world’s southern-most coral reef.

  • Days 1-4 Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island

Fly into Adelaide and take a short flight over to Kangaroo Island (known locally as KI) for an extraordinary wildlife experience. A visit to the Seal Bay sea lion colony is a must – interact with these magnificent creatures as you walk on the beach with a naturalist guide. Take to the water and watch with delight as your little ones’ faces light up when dolphins appear out of the surf! You’ll also encounter penguins, sea eagles, albatross and pelicans. Clamber over the incredible rock formations at Remarkable Rocks and visit a fur seal colony before enjoying sundowner drinks in the bush surrounded by the local flora and fauna. Children will be captivated when they see their first koala and kangaroo in the wild! Enjoy the fabulous facilities and breathtaking views from Southern Ocean Lodge, your luxury wilderness retreat on KI. This eco-chic lodge has perfectly captured the fine balance between nature, comfort and contemporary style. The Ocean Premium Suites are best suited to families and boast two sleeping areas as well as a cosy sunken lounge with open fire – a great place to watch the rolling waves below. All meals, beverages and guided adventures are included. The lodge can also arrange bespoke family experiences from dune boarding at KI’s unique Little Sahara inland desert to fishing on the jetty at nearby Vivonne Bay and even kite flying – wind permitting!

Stay: 4 nights at Southern Ocean Lodge, Kangaroo Island including all meals, drinks and some activities

  • Days 5-8 Red Centre

Fly back to Adelaide and up to Alice Springs where you’ll collect your 4WD. A visit to the School of the Air and the Royal Flying Doctor Service provides a fascinating insight into life in Alice, one of the world’s most isolated communities. Beyond Alice, the awe-inspiring wonders of the raw Australian Outback await. Journey along the unsealed Mereenie Loop Road to Kings Canyon, Australia’s largest and most spectacular canyon, where the vibrant red sandstone walls plummet into the green oasis of the ‘Garden of Eden’ at the base. Stay at Kings Canyon Wilderness Lodge at Kings Creek Station, a working cattle and camel station where children will love exploring by quad bike or camel! It’s worth the early start to brave the challenging walk to the canyon rim – the views from the summit are breathtaking. Reward yourself with a cool swim in the rock pools on your descent. Then on to Ayers Rock Resort to discover the remarkable rock formations of Uluru (Ayers Rock) and Kata Tjuta (The Olgas). Enjoy 2 nights of contemporary luxury at Sails in the Desert – the resort’s premium hotel where the Red Ochre Spa provides welcome relief to aching limbs after an exhilarating day. Learn how to throw a boomerang, try dot art painting, dine under a canopy of stars, ride a camel or watch sunset at ‘The Rock’ – the list of exciting activities in this ancient heart of Australia is endless! Walk around the base of Uluru whilst listening to a local ranger interpret the culture, rock art and intriguing geology of this world renowned monolith. Thrill seekers might prefer a ride around the base on the back of a Harley Davidson motorbike!

Head to Bondi Beach for a family surf lesson, enjoy a private tour of Sydney Opera House or sail on the sparkling harbour waters. Venture inland to the dramatic waterfalls and sandstone cliffs of the Blue Mountains, (worth extending for a few nights if time allows).
