    Just a 2 hour drive south of Melbourne, beautiful Phillip Island is most famously known for its little penguins which march up the beach at dusk every evening. But unbeknown to many, the island also boasts koalas, an amazing variety of birdlife and the Southern Hemisphere’s largest fur seal colony – not to mention the miles of rugged natural coastline and glorious unspoiled deserted beaches. Spend the night at Glen Isla Homestead, a historic guest house just 100 metres from a pristine sandy beach and one of the warmest welcomes you could expect from husband and wife team Ian and Madeleine Baker. We’d highly recommend joining the Ultimate penguin experience at dusk.

  • Day 9 Mornington Penisula

    Day 9-10 Big Blue Backyard, Mornington Peninsula

    Before leaving Philip Island this morning it is well worth driving to the magnificent headland known as ‘The Nobbies’ and view the fur seal colony on the live cameras (1½ kilometres offshore, a rocky outcrop known as Seal Rocks, is home to Australia’s largest colony of fur seals). Walk along the boardwalk to the blowhole for some spectacular rugged coastline views. Then head west towards your next port of call, the Mornington Peninsula, a delightful corner of Victoria renowned for its beaches, wineries and quaint villages. Stay at Big Blue Backyard a secluded private retreat, with a rugged ocean beach as your back yard.  Enjoy a wide array of activities in the area - from swimming with dolphins to horseriding, paddleboarding lessons or gourmet wine tours.

    The Great Ocean Road beckons! Head towards Sorrento where you’ll board the car ferry across to Queenscliff at the start of the Great Ocean Road. This legendary coastal drive winds along clifftops, up breathtaking headlands, through rainforests and to the edge of beaches – it’s not surprising this is widely considered one of the most spectacular drives in the world! Be sure to take your time and make lots of photo stops along the way! Your first destination is Apollo Bay where a self-contained villa is your stylish home away from home by the sea. The following day you will travel though the untouched rainforest of the Great Otway National Park before hugging the coast again and reaching the Twelve Apostles. Your home for the night is the delightful Oscars Boutique Hotel.
