Bali is an idyllic island. It’s one of my favourite places in the world. Not just for the enchanting verdant scenery and volcanic landscapes but for the people, whose deep belief in spirituality and balance creates a special vibe of warmth, friendliness and calm that you just can’t quite describe unless you’ve been. Take my word for it – it’s incredibly special and makes this busy island one of the world’s most blissful havens.

In recent years, Bali’s reputation has taken a bit of a knock, mainly due to how busy it has become. Its popularity has soared, and with that comes a growing number of hotels, scooters and traffic jams. It can take longer to get around than you’d think. But the good news is that beyond the hotspots in the south, the real Bali is still there – peaceful, spiritual and totally serene. You just need to know where to go. And that’s where we come in. We’ve explored the island from top to bottom and know exactly where to find the hidden retreats, remote beaches and jungle hideaways that offer a taste of Bali – as it should be.

Here are some of our favourite untouched escapes:

Soori Bali
Tucked away between rice paddies and the Indian Ocean on Bali’s quieter southwest coast, Soori is a sleek and peaceful retreat that feels a world away from the island’s crowds. The architecture is striking and modern but completely in tune with its surroundings, with all-villa accommodation offering uninterrupted sea or mountain views. It’s understated, elegant and effortlessly calming.

Samanvaya
Set among the rice terraces of Sidemen in east Bali, Samanvaya is an adults-only hideaway that oozes tranquillity. Think sweeping valley views, stylish thatched villas and a sense of total escape. The spa is wonderful, and the surrounding area is perfect for gentle treks through traditional villages and countryside.

Lost Lindenberg
A hidden gem on Bali’s wild west coast, Lost Lindenberg is a beautifully offbeat retreat. Reached via a winding path through the jungle, the rooms sit high in the trees with views over black-sand beaches and the crashing surf. It’s remote, peaceful and deeply connected to the natural world – perfect for those wanting something a little different.

Sanak Retreat
Tucked into the rice fields in the valley below the Munduk highlands in the island’s north, Sanak Retreat is a charming, family-run hideaway with a big heart. Days are spent with mountain views, morning yoga and village walks through the hills. It’s warm, rustic and full of soul, ideal for a taste of traditional Bali far from the crowds.

Capella Ubud
With a stunning setting, surrounded by paddy fields and overlooking the jungle and Wos River, the impressive Capella Ubud is located in the authentic village of Keliki, about 20 minutes from the centre of Ubud. The ‘camp’ is uniquely designed to reflect the spirit and traditional way of life of early European settlers from the 1800s with uber-luxurious tents strategically placed down the side of the valley. The design is playful and theatrical and every detail feels indulgent, from the private saltwater pools to the campfire storytelling and jungle cinema. It’s bold, beautiful and unforgettable.

Amankila
One of Bali’s most iconic hotels, Amankila is perched on a lush hillside with views over the Lombok Strait. It’s a classic for a reason. With its tiered infinity pools, elegant suites and quiet stretch of beach, it’s a place to truly unwind. It’s also perfectly placed for exploring Bali’s lesser-known east coast.

Nirjhara
Close to the sacred site of Tanah Lot, Nirjhara is a peaceful retreat tucked between jungle, rice fields and a cascading river. It’s just a short hop from Canggu but feels far more serene, offering a laid-back escape without straying too far from Bali’s buzzy beach scene. Spend your days lounging by the pool, stretching out at yoga or indulging in the tranquil spa, and your evenings at Ambu, the relaxed restaurant overlooking the jungle. This is Bali at its most soulful.

Want to go even further off the beaten track?

You could also consider twinning Bali with another of Indonesia’s islands. Head to Sumba for an off-grid beach escape at Cap Karoso, the inimitable Nihi Sumba or the beautifully secluded Sanubari. Or, for something truly adventurous, venture to Komodo and cruise around the islands aboard your own traditional phinisi yacht

You can also take a look at one of our suggested itineraries – Rural & Rustic: Bali & Sumba – which combines two different sides of Bali with a few blissful days in Sumba. Expect jungle adventures, rice terrace walks, soul-soothing spas and remote beaches.
