The overwater bungalows which hang over an impossibly turquoise lagoon are an iconic image in The Islands of Tahiti. While staying in one is an incredible experience and something you must do if you visit Tahiti, travel specialist Melissa MacSween explains that it’s not the only way to explore French Polynesia.
Hop aboard a yacht and cruise around Tahiti’s islands for a completely different perspective on this incredible archipelago. Step aboard your own personal craft for a minimum of three nights, or if you’re feeling adventurous, extend it to a full week. Imagine having the five-star luxury service of a hotel, but on your own private yacht. It will be crewed by a captain who will get you safely from A to B, while you enjoy your al fresco breakfast, lunch and dinner created by your own on- board chef. Any dietary requirements you may have will be completely catered for.
Everything is included, so you don’t need to worry about a thing. All you need to do is arrive, turn off your phone and completely switch off from the real world! Your cosy, air-conditioned en-suite cabin will contain everything you need, from your beach towels to your soaps. You can also enjoy a full range of water sports while on board as you stop off to paddle the beautiful waters around you. These will vary from yacht to yacht but typically you will have a choice of snorkel equipment, stand-up paddleboards and water floats. You will be taken to all of the best snorkelling spots, so make sure you come prepared with your underwater camera if you have one!
Your crew will plan your own tailored itinerary with your help, adapting it wherever you desire. You will normally sail for two to three hours each day and then anchor up for the night. You will drop anchor just in time for sunset, hopefully with a glass of fizz in hand!
Then you will end your trip in whichever resort you’ve chosen on the iconic island of Bora Bora. Make sure it’s an overwater bungalow, then you’ll get the best of both worlds!
