Our team of specialists have some suggestions for your luggage essentials, which will help maximise your time in The Islands of Tahiti. We’d advise buying specialist items in advance, due to the remote nature of Tahiti.
Keep cool
The Tahitian islands have a hot, tropical climate all year round, so light clothing is essential. It’ll be pretty hot when you arrive, so if you want to be super prepared, maybe you could get changed on the plane in anticipation!
Evening attire
For the evenings in Tahiti, casual trousers and shirts are recommended for the men (shorts and sandals/flip flops aren’t usually allowed in hotel restaurants at night), while summer dresses are fine for women. If you’re still not sure – please check with your specialist.
On the beach
Accessories like hats, sunglasses and suntan lotion are essential in The Islands of Tahiti. We’d recommend getting reef-safe sun cream, which is free from coral- damaging chemicals. It’s worth remembering that even on an overcast day, the tropical sun is still strong.
Camera
It seems obvious but take a camera! If you have one, make sure you pack an underwater camera or GoPro, so you can capture the coloured reefs that Tahiti has to offer.
Keep the bugs at bay
Though malaria isn’t a risk in Tahiti, we’d still recommend packing some mosquito repellent to keep the insects away, especially in the evenings.
Be reef safe
We’d strongly advise buying a pair of reef shoes to take with you because the live coral that exists within Tahiti’s lagoon can be very sharp if you step on it with bare feet. They’re easily available online and in some outdoor shops in the UK.
Liquids
It’s handy to know that if you’re transiting through an airport and then directly onto another flight (domestic or international), you will go through security again. This is especially good to bear in mind if you’re going to a different island after landing in Papeete. So, if you’ve purchased any liquids en route over 100ml (including suncream and aftershave), they will be seized by security. If you take shower products with you, please try and make sure they are natural and with no microbeads.
Hiking
The larger islands are dominated by lush mountain interiors and we’d implore you to explore them on guided jungle hikes. If you’re planning to do one, we’d advise packing a pair of walking shoes, as the terrain can be rough and uneven in places.
