Home to more than 161km of Caribbean coast along the Yucatan Peninsular, the Riviera Maya offers a lot more besides the allure of the beach. We have summed up our top 7 things to do below…

Tulum

Once an old beach and jungle town, Tulum has transformed over the years and is now a chic, bohemian destination, popular with visitors who want to see the Tulum Ruins, the most spectacular remaining structure being the Castillo or Castle.  Don’t miss the awe-inspiring views on your way down or a visit to the picture-perfect beach below!

Chichen Itza

Chichen Itza, a UNESCO World Heritage Site, is one of the most grand ruin sites in the world and was listed on the 7 New Wonders of The World in 2007. Clap your hands in front of the 1,100 year old Temple of Kukulcan and it is said that the pyramid answers in the voice of the sacred quetzal bird.  A couple of hours drive from Rivera Maya it is a bit harder to get to, but it is worth the effort when you see these incredible pyramids.

Ka’an

The Sian Ka’an (‘’Origin of the Sky’’) Biosphere Reserve is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This 1.3 million-acre nature reserve is located south of Tulum and is home to over 350 species of bird and over 300 species of butterfly, as well as some incredibly rare creatures such as manantees, spider monkeys, jaguars and toucans to name a few!  A place of sublime natural beauty focussing on sustainable tourism, it is well worth a visit!

Cenotes

Riviera Maya has more than 300 cenotes in total. These natural sinkholes have developed over millions of years, and they are the result of limestone rock collapses which uncover a body of water. In Mayan times they were used as the fresh water supply, however, today they serve as subterranean swimming pools.  Visitors will enjoy a magical feeling of being lost in another world!

Tequila and Ceviche tasting

This is an absolute must when in Mexico.  Whilst sampling delicious ceviche tapas, learn the history of the much loved spirit of tequila, discover all the different varieties that are available and, most importantly, what to pair it with. We recommend heading to Viceroy Riviera Maya for the finest experience.

Beaches

All of the beaches in Riviera Maya are mind-blowingly incredible, but for us at Turquoise, Belmond Maroma Resort and Spa trumps the pack. Go for a stroll along this cashmere-soft pristine white sand beach or take a dip in the sea and explore the vibrant underwater world!

Snorkelling

Riviera Maya is home to the second largest barrier reef in the world, so as you might expect, the snorkelling is second to none! One of our top spots is Akumal which is located just down the coast from Playa Del Carmen and is well worth a visit. Be sure to look out for the resident sea turtles!
