With its Robinson Crusoe-like scenery and carefree attitude, we’re mad about Fundu Lagoon in the Zanzibar archipelago for a honeymoon or holiday for couples. We’re delighted to say it’s one of the featured hotels in our Holiday Sale for 2019 and as a result, we wanted to share five reasons why we love this castaway island so much…

1. It feels so far away from everywhere else

When you’re at Fundu Lagoon, you really do feel like you’re in the middle of nowhere. It’s situated on Pemba, an island that flies completely under the radar compared to the Zanzibar archipelago’s main island of Unguja. The only other faces you’ll see are that of the locals and it’s this level of remoteness that adds to its allure. Even getting there is part of the fun, via a couple of flights, a drive across Pemba and then a boat across the bay.

2. You can sleep under canvas with added luxury

The brilliant thing about Fundu Lagoon’s accommodation is you can live like Robinson Crusoe and a celebrity at the same time. Makuti-thatched roofs shelter spacious tented rooms, all of which offer discretion and a wedge of African luxury at the same time. The Beachfront Rooms – which are part of our Holiday Sale offer – offer direct access onto the sand.

3. The diving is superb

With its own in-house dive centre, Fundu Lagoon is a diving hotspot. Surrounded by the Misali Island Marine Conservation Area means its reefs are pristine and they contain twice as much coral as anywhere else in Tanzania.  Spot barracudas, turtles and manta rays among the many tropical fish on an unbelievable underwater adventure.

4. Its excursions are both captivating and good value

Even though Fundu Lagoon is a perfect chill spot, there’s plenty to do. Take jungle walks to local villages to see their traditional way of living, explore the Jambangome ruins go a romantic sunset dhow cruise with a bottle of bubbly – just to name a few. Unlike most places as remote as this, all of the excursions are reasonably priced, too.

5. You can spot friendly marine mammals

As well as below the surface, boat trips at Fundu Lagoon help you spot glimpses of some magnificent marine mammals. Hope on a dolphin safari to spot Pemba’s resident pod of bottlenose dolphins and if you visit between August and late September, you’ll have the chance of seeing migrating humpback whales as well.
