Fundu Lagoon

This barefoot bohemian island hideaway off the coast of Zanzibar (on unspoilt Pemba Island, Zanzibar's little known sister to the north) is the epitome of twenty-first century Robinson Crusoe shabby chic! Its laid-back charm is perfect for a post-safari chill-out – and what’s more, a stay at Fundu is all-inclusive ….as well as meals, soft drinks, house wines, local beers and use of snorkelling equipment, you can enjoy unguided mangrove canoe safaris and village treks. Pemba is known for its frequent sightings of migrating humpback whales between August and November and a resident pod of dolphins live in the waters offshore - pop out to see them on an early morning boat trip and then return for breakfast. Fundu is a top dive location too. Only accessible by boat (getting there is all part of the experience), Fundu Lagoon is spread along a natural beach where the jungle meets the sea.

SLEEP

Fundu is one of the most romantic retreats on the East African coastline. Wooden walkways and sandy paths lead to the 18 makuti-thatched tented rooms and suites - all of which enjoy breathtaking ocean views from their wooden deck. Some rooms are situated along the beachfront whilst others are on the hillside and catch the cooling sea breezes. There are two Suites - the Jungle Suite and Beachfront Suite, both of which have a private deck and plunge pool – plus four Superior Suites with more extensive indoor and outdoor living space, a larger plunge pool and a mezzanine viewing platform. Peace, calm and discreet privacy are paramount here.

EAT

Despite its remote location, the dining experience is exceptional. Meals are served in the open-sided, palm-thatched restaurant which takes full advantage of the ocean views. A daily fisherman's catch and unusual tropical fruits add an exotic twist to the Zanzibari menu. Delicious picnics and romantic candlelit dinners under the stars can be arranged. There is also a weekly beach barbecue and on Sunday nights, the jetty plays host to a feast of Swahili cuisine and music!

PAMPER & PLAY

Fundu’s softly curved infinity pool is set on the hillside with incredible sea views and fringed by natural forest. Just steps away, the Fusion Spa combines the ancient healing philosophies of both Africa and Asia with Fundu Lagoon’s own blended infusions. Watersports include sunset dhow cruises, stand-up paddle boarding, kayaking, mangrove canoe safaris and superb fishing. A few miles west, green and hawksbill turtles nest on neighbouring Misali Island’s pure white beaches while coconut crabs live in the coral rock. A jewel in Pemba's crown with a rich ecosystem, pristine Misali has great fishing, snorkelling and diving and an excursion here is always a highlight. Fundu Lagoon has a fully equipped PADI dive centre too - so you can be Crusoe and Cousteau on the same day!
