Our Asia Product Manager has just returned from a trip to Langkawi and the southern islands of Thailand. This part of the region feels very different to places like Phuket, Krabi or Samui and that is exactly why it is so interesting.
If you are a little more intrepid and enjoy discovering somewhere new rather than choosing a destination purely for its luxury hotels, these islands are for you. There is comfort when you want it, but the real appeal is the journey itself, the variety of islands and the feeling that you are travelling properly rather than just staying in one place.
Langkawi
Langkawi is such a beautiful place to start. Jungle, calm seas and a real sense of space make it feel like a proper escape before heading into Thailand.
The Datai
Revisiting The Datai after its complete renovation was a real bonus. The setting has not changed at all and is still one of the most spectacular in the region, with lush jungle rolling down to an incredible stretch of beach. What has changed is the feel of the interiors. The lighter wood tones make everything look fresher and brighter while still feeling very natural and very much in keeping with the surroundings.
The villas are stunning and feel incredibly private. The addition of the Nature Centre is also impressive, along with the behind-the-scenes environmental and recycling work that guests do not always see. The team work closely with the local community and there is a genuine focus on sustainability and giving back, which makes staying here feel even more special.
The beach is sensational and remains one of the best anywhere.
Ritz Carlton Langkawi
Ritz Carlton is a great alternative for guests wanting a five-star resort in Langkawi at a slightly gentler price point. The resort is set in lush, jungly grounds so the buildings blend in nicely rather than feeling dominant. The rooms are modern and comfortable with local touches. There is also a great kids club with its own splash pool.
The beach villas are the standout option. They sit right on the sand but are raised enough to feel private, with large pools and plenty of space. Lots of dining option, I particularly loved the Chinese restaurant with lovely ocean views. It is also easy to head into the local town for a change of scene in the evenings.
This works really well for both couples and families looking for luxury without the price of The Datai.
Crossing into Thailand
The journey from Langkawi into Thailand is straightforward and part of the experience. The fast boat to Koh Lipe is enclosed and relatively smooth, although the air conditioning is very cold so it is worth bringing a layer. Once in Thailand, travel between the southern islands feels much more like local transport. Boats run to set schedules and hop between islands like buses.
It is not polished luxury travel, in fact its pretty simple, but if you are happy to go with the flow, it works well and adds to the sense of adventure.
Koh Lipe
Koh Lipe is lively, fun and quite busy, but in a good way. The beaches are beautiful and the island has a relaxed, social feel with walking streets full of cafés, bars and restaurants. There is a real mix of travellers here and a great atmosphere, particularly in the evenings.
Just offshore is where Koh Lipe really shines. The surrounding islands are part of a national marine park and the snorkelling is exceptional. Day trips by longtail boat take you to some of the most beautiful beaches and coral reefs in the area.
Irene Resort and Villas
Whist there are some charming bungalow style retreats along the beach, Irene Resort and Villas is the only option on the island that fits the Turquoise level of luxury. The villas are right on the beach, each with its own pool, and have modern interiors with a Thai feel. The Sand Pool Villas are the best choice, offering direct beach access and plenty of space.
There is a beach club atmosphere in the afternoon and gentle live acoustic music in the evening. Overall, it is a comfortable and stylish base on a fun island and suits guests who want something a little different.
Koh Mook and Koh Kradan
Koh Mook and Koh Kradan feel much more untouched and natural. These islands are quieter, simpler and all about the beach and the sea. Importantly, both can be visited on day trips from Koh Lanta, so there is no need to move hotels if you prefer not to. There is some simple overnight accommodation.
Koh Mook is famous for Emerald Cave, where you swim through a dark tunnel before emerging into a hidden lagoon surrounded by cliffs. Koh Kradan is all about soft sand, clear water and a real castaway feel.
They are beautiful places to experience, even just for the day.
Koh Lanta
Koh Lanta is one of my favourites, a wonderfully natural, lush green island. It is relaxed and easy, with enough restaurants and bars to give evenings some variety without ever feeling busy. It is also a great base for snorkelling trips, including to Koh Haa, which was a real highlight with clear water and colourful marine life.
Pimalai Resort & Spa
Pimalai is beautifully run and set in a stunning natural environment. The lower part of the resort has more of a relaxed atmosphere, while the villas offer privacy and are ideal for honeymooners. The excursions are excellent and the spa is lovely and jungly. It works well for both couples and families.
Layana
Layana is adults only and very easy going. It sits on a lovely beach in the north of the island and is ideal for guests wanting something simple, calm and well-priced. Two pools, a beachfront restaurant, close to local restaurants and shops and a relaxed feel throughout.
Rayavadee, Krabi
Rayavadee was a dramatic way to end the journey. Set among limestone cliffs and jungle, with individual pavilions scattered through beautiful gardens, it feels very special. The resort spans three beaches including Railay Bay and Phra Nang Beach, all of which have external visitors, so these are not castaway-quiet beaches. However, now that longtail boats are no longer allowed on Phra Nang Beach, it is so much quieter and the resort feels very separate from the beach.
Once you step onto the sand there is so much space and a really lovely, happy, friendly vibe, with hotel guests sharing the beach alongside local visitors. It doesn’t put me off at all and actually adds to the energy of this dramatic location. The setting is stunning and the atmosphere remains lovely.
It also pairs well with Koh Lanta if guests want to add a final wow factor.
Krabi and Koh Lanta are two of our most popular Thai destinations and for very good reason. We love them and would love to share them with you. If you are keen to explore a little further and are feeling more intrepid, speak to one of our team. We would love to help you plan an island hopping itinerary and can of course twin any of these locations with Phuket, Khao Lak, Koh Yao Noi, or even over to the Gulf coast with Koh Samui and Koh Phangan.
We know these islands inside out and are waiting for your call.
