Nick, one of our experienced Asia specialists, recently stayed at Pangkor Laut Resort on Malaysia’s west coast. Just a few hours by road and a short boat trip from Kuala Lumpur, it’s an easy add-on to a Malaysia itinerary – the kind of place that works whether you’re dreaming of a beach escape, a jungle retreat, or a blend of both.
I wasn’t quite sure what to expect from Pangkor Laut, but from the moment I arrived I realised it’s a paradise for nature lovers like me. Hornbills are everywhere, sea eagles skim the waves, and whole trees seem alive with fruit bats. Monkeys swing through the branches and into your room if you’re not careful! On the guided nature walk I was blown away by how much wildlife thrives on such a small island, from sea otters to, if you’re incredibly lucky, the rare pangolin.
The villas have all been recently refurbished and feel modern, stylish and very comfortable. I loved the sense of being tucked away in nature while still having all the little luxuries on hand. Whether you’re by the beach, in the jungle, or perched over the water, the setting makes each villa feel special in its own way.
Dining was a real highlight. The variety is good, but Fisherman’s Cove was a clear favourite – fine dining quality without the fine dining price tag. And every evening I made sure to be at Emerald Bay for happy hour, drink in hand as the sun set right in front of me. It’s impossible not to feel completely content in that moment.
Pangkor Laut is so easy to reach from Kuala Lumpur, yet once you’re there it feels wonderfully remote. The combination of wildlife, beaches, jungle and luxury makes it a very special place. I loved every minute and can honestly say I’m already planning my return.
Ten out of ten – would definitely recommend.
