Now, if you’re like my wife and I, you have just endured the pain, frustration and, dare I say it, anger of our 16-year-old daughter’s mock GSCEs, you will be probably thinking you deserve a break without your children. But these are only the mocks and after the real things in June, both you and your family will certainly feel like you need a holiday. However, where do you go that will keep exhausted parents, image-conscious daughters and Xbox-obsessed sons happy? Sophie, our daughter, generally asks us to remain in the car anywhere we take her for fear of embarrassment and the most we can get out of her when we ask her anything, is “it’s good”, before the headphones are placed firmly back on.
Now, I have to confess that I am being slightly harsh. Sophie has worked incredibly hard and I have to say, despite the fiendishly complicated new grading system, she is set to achieve better results than either parents dreamt of, so hats off to her. Of course, we want to reward her for efforts as well! But where should we go? Well, the Maldives is a drawcard stronger even than Reading Festival (which seems to be a rite of passage for every 16 year old in the region) and an overwater bungalow beats a pop-up tent!
