Hot off the plane from Mauritius, Bella shares some insight into one of our most beloved island destinations, including some of her favourite places to stay and what to do whilst on holiday in Mauritius.

If you had to describe Mauritius in three words, what would they be?

Beautiful, calm, natural.

How did you get there, was the flight easy and how did you find driving (being driven!) around the island?

My friend and I flew direct to Mauritius with Air Mauritius, the flight time is 12 hours. We were then picked up at the airport by our lovely driver Ragoo, who told us a lot about Mauritius’ history and local sights. The roads are great and therefore the driving was very relaxing and there was always a stunning view out of the window of either the beach, mountains, sugar cane fields or local villages.

Is there anything that surprised you about Mauritius?

The weather was far better than I had anticipated, it was never cold even when there was the occasional rain shower. We travelled in shoulder season so were expecting the temperatures to be lower.

Which was your favourite hotel for honeymoon couples and why? Which room category would you suggest?

For a honeymoon couple I would suggest either the Shangri-La Le Touessrok or LUX Le Morne. There are so many special experiences available for honeymooners, as well as total tranquillity at the resorts with privacy and romantic experiences integrated within their stay. The Ocean View Coral Deluxe Rooms at the Shangri-La allow privacy with un-paralleled views of the beach and sea. The Prestige Junior Suite at LUX Le Morne is spacious and luxurious, whilst also allowing for privacy with all of the beautiful plantation between the rooms.

Which was your favourite hotel for families and why? Which room category would you suggest?

For families, I would recommend the Four Seasons Anahita Resort because the resort is big and spacious enough for everyone to explore and so many choices of restaurants, activities and other facilities available, including golf carts and bikes to help move around. The Island Beach Pool Villa is its own piece of heaven with a private garden, outside showers, and direct access to the beach. The villa would easily accommodate a family of two adults and one child. For families of four, check out the two or three bed villas.

In terms of excursions and day trips, can you tell us a little about your trip to Ile Aux Cerfs, what is it like and would you recommend? Did you go anywhere else?

Our trip to Ile Aux Cerfs was enormous fun, we were taken out by boat (cocktail in hand!) and is an absolute must if you are able to visit, particularly from the Four Seasons Resort. The transfer is free, and they also have a bar and restaurant on the island, serving fresh fish and even fresher drinks. The staff were so kind and even gave us shoes to wear in the sea, free suncream and a lovely man even cleaned our sunglasses! We had a lovely time relaxing on the beach and the most delicious lunch. The 7 Colours of the Earth & Waterfalls at Chamarel was also a really lovely experience I’d recommend, the coloured earth was a beautiful natural phenomenon. Our driver Ragoo was also very helpful in telling us all about the surrounding natural wildlife and vegetation. There are plenty of things to do in Mauritius but this was definitely one of our favourite experiences.
