Tanzania is the true spiritual home of the safari: from chimp trekking in the Mahale mountains above Lake Tanganyika, to the famous lions of the sweeping grasslands of the Serengeti, from the soaring heights of Mt. Kilimanjaro to the remote Selous in the far south, a safari holiday to Tanzania offers an awe-inspiring diversity of landscapes and experiences. Here is our guide to seven of our favourite safari lodges in Tanzania…

North Tanzania

Lamai Serengeti

Lamai Serengeti sits tucked amongst the rocks of Kogakuria Kopje with panoramic views of the surrounding landscape, just a few miles from where the wildebeest cross the Mara River. This area of lush, rolling grassland and tree-lined watercourses is the hub around which the Serengeti migration circulates. For roughly a quarter of the year, between late July and October, this is where you’ll find the migration. Right here, on your doorstep. Incredible.Lamai Serengeti Tanzania safari

Serengeti Safari Camp

Serengeti Safari Camp was the first of it’s kind. The original mobile migration chasing safari camp.  It was designed with a purpose in mind; to be in the best possible location to view the wildebeest migration as it covers hundreds of miles of the Serengeti National Park each year.  Whilst the migration is right on the doorstep of Lamai Serengeti for a few months of the year, the wildebeest, of course, move around. This is what the Serengeti Safari camp is all about- understanding the seasons and game movements and mirroring them.

Entamanu Ngorongoro

Entamanu Ngorongoro is the new cool kid on the block. Set up in the highlands on the edge of the Ngorongoro Crater- the world’s largest unbroken caldera and Africa’s most iconic wildlife destination, it’s location is truly unique. It is the only camp where you can watch the sunrise over the Ngorongoro Crater on one side and the sunset over the epic Serengeti Plains on the other.

Kuro Tarangire

All too often, Kuro Tarangire is overlooked. But this little gem tucked away in the Tarangire National park, is home to the next greatest concentration of wildlife after the magnificent Serengeti! One of the things we like most about this place is that you can walk straight out of camp and into wild Africa.

Chada Katavi

Chada Katavi has been preserved exactly like when it began 20 years ago – small and intimate with just six East African safari tents.  All of the tents have purposely been camouflaged to blend into the surrounding bush, so you may have some the neighbouring elephants coming round to say hello!

Greystoke Mahale

It is no exaggeration to say there literally is no place in the world like Greystoke Mahale. It is right up there on our all-time bucket-list of places to visit! Truly awesome and completely off the beaten track, the camp is nestled beneath the forested slopes of the soaring 8000 ft Mahale Mountains and home to the world’s largest known population of chimpanzees.  This remote and magical sanctuary comprises six wildly exotic wooden bandas (open-fronted cottages), each of which looks out across the soft white sand of western Tanzania’s Kangwena Beach towards the glistening waters of the lake.

Sand Rivers Selous

Set on a rocky peninsula with magnificent views over a vast sweep of the Rufiji River, intimate Sand Rivers lodge has captivated seasoned safari-goers for many years with its spectacular setting and inimitable charm. The camp is open to the elements but if you’re a die-hard Africa aficionado and love the bush, wide open spaces and solitude of Africa – then this is the place… it’s all about walking in the Selous… and working hard to find the wildlife…
