Sailing in the British Virgin Islands

Comprised of over 60 beautiful islands, very few of which are inhabited, this magical destination offers some of the best sailing, snorkelling and diving in the world, making it perfect for water babies!  Offering a wonderfully sleepy and slow paced way of life, the British Virgin Islands are a fantastic choice for families, friends and couples looking to cruise the glittering Caribbean Seas and discover the hidden gems of this remote, tranquil location.  With secluded bays and miles of pristine white sand beaches, along with low key tourism – visitors will be delighted by the authentic local bars and restaurants scattered around the islands – On a sailing holiday around BVI’s (as they are more widely known) you can choose a different stretch of sand to relax on, snorkelling location to try or local bar for cocktail sampling, every day of the week!  Known as Natures Little Secrets, it is easy to see why when you sail around this enchanting group of islands.

Please see below for a typical 7 night BVI Sailing Itinerary…

  • Day 1 – Hodges Creek Marina

Transfer to your yacht for boarding and meet your crew (and fellow guests if you are on a By The Cabin charter). Enjoy dinner and your first night on board before setting sail in the morning.

  • Day 2 – Virgin Gorda & Prickly Pear Island

Sailing time – Approximately 2 hours
After your first night on the yacht, your itinerary will take you to the largest of the islands, Virgin Gorda and the Baths marine park, which is an outstanding site of huge granite boulders and sparkling pools of shallow turquoise water to explore. After lunch, set sail for Prickly Pear Island where you can savour local nibbles and  tropical cocktails at the lovely beach bars.

  • Day 3 – Anegada

Sailing time – Approximately 2 hours
Head off early and relax on the yacht as you sail from Virgin Gorda to Anegada where the beaches are simply stunning and the snorkelling is second to none. After lunch, take a taxi to Loblolly Bay on the North Shore and enjoy seeing all of Anegadas beautiful features enroute… flamingos, salt ponds and breathtaking beaches!

  • Day 4 – Guana Island & Cane Garden Bay

Sailing time – Approximately 3 hours
This morning is an exhilarating sail from Anegada to Monkey Point on Guana Island. Described as one of the islands best snorkelling spots, you are likely to swim with turtles and schools of tropical fish! After a short stop, resume your journey and admire the stunning views of Tortola’s mountainous north coast before arriving at Cane Garden Bay, where you will find a picturesque beach flanked by lush rainforest – perfect for an afternoon hike!  If you’d rather stay on the beach, there are watersports available in the bay – And it is home to some of the BVI’s best beach bars!

  • Day 5 – Sandy Cay & Jost Van Dyke

Sailing time – Approximately 1 hour
Today venture a short distance to Sandy Cay, an uninhabited island which was donated to BVI by the Rockefeller family. After a short stop, the yacht will anchor off White Bay for lunch, after which you can enjoy a Painkiller cocktail at the infamous Soggy Dollar Bar! Moor off Great Harbour on Jost Van Dyke for the night – hop ashore if you want to sample some of the best nightlife in the BVI’s!

  • Day 6 – Tortola & Norman Island

Sailing time – Approximately 1¼ hours
Set sail at around 9.30am to West End, Tortola, where you can anchor at Sopers Hole marina – a beautiful Caribbean harbour which is well worth a visit. Then move on to the Indians Marine Park for some spectacular snorkelling in gin clear waters, before sailing to Bight Bay on Norman Island, said to be the inspiration for Robert Louis Stevenson’s Treasure Island.  Visitors will delight in searching for treasure on these unspoiled beaches!  Don’t miss the snorkelling or diving here – it is remarkable, with the waters teeming with vibrant tropical fish!

  • Day 7 – Cooper Island

    Sailing time – Approximately 1 ¼ hours
Enjoy a leisurely sail this morning to the Rhone Marine Park. Snorkel over the steamer wreck that sank in 1867, before enjoying lunch on the yacht. Then head to Cooper Island where you can spend the afternoon and evening. The beach here is one of the best in BVI and the atmosphere in the bar is friendly and quite lively in the evenings!

  • Day 8 – Hodges Creek Marina

Sailing time – Approximately ½ hour
Wake up early and enjoy a final swim before sailing back to Hodges Creek Marina before disembarking at 9am.

  • Why Not Extend Your Stay...

With a variety of beautiful islands and hotels to choose from, why not extend your stay and indulge in a few days on dry land in the Caribbean? Antigua is a great island to twin with the British Virgin Islands... for romantic couples we love COCOS Hotel or The Inn at English Harbour, for families our recommendations would be Carlisle Bay or Blue Waters.
