Siwandu, Tanzania

Four times bigger than the Serengeti, the Selous in southern Tanzania is the largest game reserve in Africa. A UNESCO World Heritage site, the Selous evokes the wild, remote, untouched and unspoiled side of Africa where only a handful of camps are located. This is off-the-radar territory, far from the madding safari crowds, where those privileged enough to visit enjoy an exclusive, intimate safari experience. It is here, sheltered in a grove of palms on the shores of Lake Nzerakera amidst the wetlands of the Rufiji River system, that Siwandu – an authentic under-canvas classic safari camp - captures the heart-strings of all those visit. The abundance of water and riverine wilderness around the camp make it a prime game viewing area, rich in both wildlife and an extraordinary array of vegetation. Access is via a scenic flight from Dar es Salaam to Siwandu’s airstrip.

Highlights

Siwandu

Sleep

Siwandu has ten stylish mosquito-net-draped ensuite tents, topped in thatch and carefully spaced along the lakeshore. The tents are split between two camps - Siwandu North and Siwandu South - with five tents in each. All tents offer maximum privacy and all have a unique octagonal-shaped design with stunning lake views from a private wooden decked verandah. Rise early to watch the sunrise or relax with a gin and tonic as the bush succumbs to another beautiful African sunset. Open-air solar heated showers and overhead fans complete the bush luxury scene. What's more, each tent comes complete with the services of a personal butler. Multi-generational families or groups of friends travelling together can book the camps exclusively to create their very own retreat in the African bush.

Play

Both camps have a swimming pool and the communal mess areas are built on stilts with panoramic views across the lake. Siwandu’s knowledgeable driver guides take guests on exhilarating game drives in open-sided vehicles to see the wildlife which includes wild dog, elephant and lion. Walking, slow-paced with an expert guide, is a wonderful way to get close to the wildlife whilst also learning more about the ecosystems, flora and fauna of the area. (Walks are offered to guests aged 16 years and over). Boating and fishing (catch and release) are also high on the agenda here. The waterways of the Rufiji River delta are the largest in East Africa and getting out on a boat to see the birdlife and watch animals come down to drink at the water’s edge is a magical experience. The months from June to October tend to be dry and warm whilst the short rains fall during November and December and bring about a spring time in the Selous when the plant life and flowers burst into life. Temperatures heat up from November through to March which makes a dip in the swimming pool even more appealing! The camp is closed during the long rains in April and May.

Eat

There's no need to compromise on your dining expectations despite being in the bush! Dining alfresco under the African night sky, bush breakfasts under the shade of a Tamarind Tree and evening drinks around a glowing campfire whilst sharing African stories long into the night, are all part of the Siwandu experience. The cuisine is delicious and all meals, drinks (excluding premium brands and Champagne), game activities on a shared basis (game drives, bush walks and boat trips) are included in your stay. Fishing is an additional cost.
