Hemingways Nairobi

A member of the ‘Small Leading Hotels of the World’, Hemingways is one of Nairobi’s leading hotels. Sister property to the famous Hemingways in Watamu and Ol Seki Hemingways Mara Camp, this 45-room boutique hotel boasts a classic style which harks back to the bygone days of the original Kenyan safari. It is wonderfully located at the foot of the Ngong Hills in the peaceful suburb of Karen - the city's renowned suburb generally believed to have been named after Karen Blixen, the famous Danish author of the award-winning novel and film 'Out ofAfrica'. Her farm was located just a two minute drive from the hotel. What's more, some of Nairobi's best eateries and points of interest are all close-by, making this an ideal one or two night retreat pre or post your safari.

SLEEP

All plantation-style suites are spacious with balconies or private terraces overlooking the landscaped lawns or across to the Ngong Hills. They are arranged over the ground and upper floors of two wings - the Hemingway Wing and the Blixen Wing. The colonial interiors include leather trunks and net-draped four poster beds and what's more, a personal butler is on hand to cater to your every need. The inherent kindness of East African culture is at the core of the Hemingways Nairobi philosophy - you simply won't find a more perfect spot to rest for a day or two either before or after your international flight.

EAT

The Brasserie serves an ever-changing menu with a strong focus on fresh produce sourced locally from farms in Kenya - seafood from the Coast and grilled meats from farms in the North. Pastries, breads, cakes and pasta are all freshly perpared in the kitchens daily. Speciality grilled meats from South Africa, cooked in the Josper Oven, are also a unique feature of the menu. Afternoon tea is a Hemingways tradition and can be enjoyed on the terrace with views across the grounds. A gourmet selection of handcrafted miniature cakes, pastries and classic English finger sandwiches are complemented by a selected range of Kenyan and worldwide teas.

The contemporary Hemingways Bar has incredible views of the Ngong Hills from the terrace and offers a wonderful collection of cocktails, rare cognacs, whiskies, wines and Champagnes. Ernest Hemingway loved mojitos, especially the Cuban version at La Bodeguita, and Hemingways cocktail is the most authentic you will find! If you fancy venturing out to a local haunt, favourite foodie hotspots include the elegant Talisman gastro-lounge, popular with Karen residents, the Tin Roof Cafe - a quaint courtyard cafe close to artisan shops serving crepes, salads and sandwiches - and Boho Eatery, a great local brunch hang-out with vegetarian and vegan dishes, along with classics like their pulled pork burger!

Guana Island, British Virgin Islands

Guana Island is a rainforested bolthole that offers the ultimate in tropical seclusion. It has seven (yes, seven!) pristine beaches and acres of island wilderness that you can explore and enjoy almost all to yourself, bar a few inquisitive rock iguanas and migratory birds. Bliss!
