Aranoa - Austral Islands & Beyond
12 nights from £8,995pp
Aranoa - Austral Islands & Beyond
Launching in March 2027, the brand new, purpose-built Aranoa will explore the remote and rarely visited Austral Islands located almost 400 miles south of Tahiti’s capital, Papeete, as well as limited departures to Pitcairn and Gambier Islands.
The Austral archipelago has just seven islands, five of which are inhabited – Rimatara, Rurutu, Tubuai, Raivavae and Rapa – and only four of which are accessible by air. With a population under 7,000, this is an off the beaten track archipelago for the more interpid traveler with a keen interest in untouched and mysterious lands, a place where white sand meets the aquamarine lagoons, and sheer cliffs and ancient valleys roll into farmland.
Fascinating archaeological remains bear witness to a well organised, pre-European community of rich culture and ancient religious practices. The cliffs and caves of the Austral Islands were once burial grounds but today they provide natural viewing platform for visitors to watch humpback whales in the ocean below during their migration to warmer water to give birth from August to October each year.
Note: Some Austral cruises will not visit Rapa, and instead include a visit to either Maupiti or Huahine. Please chat to our team of Tahiti experts for details and cruise dates.
Pitcairn & Gambier Islands
On 21st July and 8th September 2027, the Aranoa will set sail from Papeete for a 12-day voyage to the far-flung Gambier Islands passing through the white-sand paradise islands in the Tuamotus and visiting remote Pitcairn Island where the Bounty famously dropped anchor two centuries ago. This is one of the world's most isolated islands, and many of descendants of the mutineers still live here today.
Your Journey
Papeete, Rimatara & Rurutu
Day 1 – Papeete
Depart from Papeete at midday (boarding from 9am) and cruise across to Moorea for afternoon activities. Set sail for the far flung Austral Islands at 10pm.
Day 2 - At Sea
Day 3 – Rimatara
The last island of the archipelago to be discovered in the 19th century, Rimatara is a small circular volcanic plateau with its own dialect and a strong sense of tradition. Home to the colourful Kuhl’s Lorikeet, or 'Ura', an endemic bird which is also found in the Cook Islands, you'll have the chance to seek this red beauty on an optional excursion. After passing through a purification smoke ceremony, an ancient tradition of welcome, discover the main villages of Amaru, Anapoto and Motuaura by truck, followed by a barbecue served on the beach of Motuaura. Dive into the crystal-clear waters with a mask and snorkel, or take a walk through the taro plants and fruit trees.
Day 4 – Rururtu
A unique atoll with basalt and limestone cliffs rising from the ocean, dotted with caves where islanders once lived, Rurutu has a volcanic interior surrounded by lush tropical jungle, white sand beaches and striking hidden bays. Known throughout Polynesia for the exceptional quality of its basketry, Rurutu is proud of its heritage creating beautiful hats, bags and baskets or rugs made of pandanus leaves and other natural materials. Visit the island and enjoy a welcoming performance of local songs, then spend time exploring the peaceful village of Moerai.
Tubuai & Raivavae
Day 5 - Tubuai
The most populated island in the Australs, the locals of Tubuai will welcome you with flower wreaths and uplifting singing. Marvel at pandanus leaf weaving and shell necklace making, which are so important to the island's inhabitants. With a cooler climate and fertile soil, the conditions are perfect for growing cabbage, lettuce and potatoes. Explore the island by truck and visit cultural sites including the marae of 'Po Tui Tui', Fort George - the first refuge of the mutineers of the Bounty from July to September 1789 - and Bloody Bay, the perfect spot for a swim and snorkel. Scuba diving for certified divers is a highlight here.
Day 6 & 7 – Raivavae
With a breathtaking lagoon encircled by emerald islets - or motus - Raivavae is referred to as the 'Bora Bora of Yesteryear', a magical garden of Eden well away from the well-trodden path. Relax on Mahanatoa beach and be welcomed by flower garlands and the sound of local songs. Take a tour of the island, including the 'Smiling Tiki' and the ancient marae - sacred place - scattered around the island. Explore the village after lunch on the beach, dip into the lagoon for some incredible snorkeling or take the optional tour to Mount Hiro.
Rapa & Tubuai
Day 8 – Rapa
'Welcome to Rapa. Next stop Antarctica' says the Captain as you arrive in this island only accessible by sea. Rapa, Easter Island's little sister, is the southernmost and most isolated of the Austral Islands. Shaped like a crescent, with a coastline cut by 12 deep bays, the island has a temperate climate, no coral reefs or coconut palms, and non-tropical fruits and vegetables. Hike just over two hours to Fort Morango Uta, visit Ahurei, the island's main village, discover the ancient fortresses, browse local arts and crafts, meet the inhabitants of this isolated island, and share a wood-fired ma'a in the village.
Day 9 – Tubuai
Day 10 – At Sea
A day to relax by the pool, hear an expert lecturer in library or simply enjoy the endless views of the Pacific Ocean. During the cruise, the spirited Polynesian crew will proudly introduce you to their way of life and entertain you with Polynesian songs and rhythms on their ukuleles and drums.
Raiatea, Bora Bora & Papeete
Day 11 - Raiatea
The birthplace of Polynesian civilization, Raiatea was the starting point for the great migrations to Hawaii, New Zealand and Easter Island. Explore the Taputapuatea marae, a UNESCO-listed sacred site. Opt to travel by pirogue along the Faaroa River, and in the afternoon, stroll through Uturoa's boutiques.
Day 12 – Bora Bora
From Bora Bora’s world-famous lagoon, gaze at majestic Mount Otemanu, the highest peak on the island. Enjoy a BBQ on a private motu surrounded by crystal clear waters and choose from a range of optional activities. Bora Bora was an American military outpost during World War II and remnants of the war such as cannons and bunkers can be seen on a 4X4 tour. Departure in the evening for Papeete.
Day 13 - Arrival back in Papeete
Time to travel home, or head out to another island for more exploration and relaxation. An overwater bungalow in Bora Bora beckons!

Life Onboard the Aranoa
Following the success of the legendary Aranui V which will continue to travel to the Marquesas Islands, the Aranoa is a purpose-built mixed passenger and cargo vessel blending modern technology with sustainable design, offering an eco-conscious way to explore the enchanting islands of French Polynesia.
The vessel is not a luxury cruise ship, it's a journey to discover the Austral archipelago’s vibrant culture, stunning landscapes, and unique island life. Up to 198 guests enjoy each voyage, with 91 well-appointed cabins, many of which include a private balcony, providing a comfortable stay for all onboard. Savour gourmet cuisine in two restaurants, enjoy a cocktail at one of two bars, unwind in two jacuzzis, browse the boutique, work out in the gym, or be pampered in the spa. Guests can even have a tattoo onboard!
Designed to minimise its environmental impact, the Aranoa will be equipped with a state-of-the-art diesel-electric propulsion system and its propellers will significantly lower acoustic impact, helping to preserve marine life, including whales. Stabilisers and a dynamic positioning system will ensure smooth navigation, even in rough seas.
Best time to travel
Tahiti is a year-round destination, although some seasons suit certain experiences better. The drier months from May to October bring sunny days, lower humidity and comfortable temperatures, while the warmer summer months can offer lush scenery and tropical showers. Tahiti enjoys a warm tropical climate throughout the year, making it an ideal island escape in almost any season.

Jump in Bora Bora’s iconic turquoise lagoon and enjoy snorkelling in the mesmerising coral garden with its tropical fish and colourful reef. Combine this with an incredible shark and ray experience and marvel at the marine life gliding around you in the warm shallow waters, with Mount Otemanu providing a sensational backdrop. Hop over to nearby Le Taha’a by Pearl Resorts and try the incredible drift snorkelling experience in the pass that runs alongside the resort. With Bora Bora’s silhouette on the horizon, step into the crystal-clear water and float along the surface as the current flows from the reef to the calm waters of Taha’a’s azure lagoon. No kicking required, you’ll simply fly over the coral and fish as you drift towards the shallow water around the resort.
For scuba diving, it’s well worth the extra flight to Rangiroa in the Tuamotus. An hour’s flight from mainland Tahiti, Rangiroa is the largest atoll in the archipelago and the second largest atoll in the world. Hundreds of coral islets and skinny sandbars encircle its vast lagoon and pods of dolphins play in the two navigable passes which link the lagoon with the ocean… there are grey and hammerhead sharks, manta rays and turtles too. Rangiroa is a diver’s paradise as the enormous lagoon is filled with an array of marine life to rival the world’s top diving spots. Stay at Hotel Kia Ora and enjoy nature’s incredible underwater playground right on your doorstep!
British passport holders don’t need a visa to visit The Islands of Tahiti.
No vaccinations are currently recommended, although The Islands of Tahiti are deemed to have a risk of the Zika virus. If you’re entering Tahiti from a Yellow Fever zone, possession of a valid Yellow Fever inoculation certificate is required. For any current travel health advice, you should seek guidance from your GP at least four to six weeks prior to travel.
The currency is the French Pacific franc.
There are no direct flights from the UK to The Islands of Tahiti. To get there, fly to Los Angeles (around 11 hours), before catching a connecting flight to Tahiti (around eight and a half hours). Other routes including flying from London via San Francisco to Papeete and also via Tokyo in the Far East.
The time difference is GMT -10 hours.
Unlike other parts of the world, most resorts in French Polynesia don’t offer all-inclusive deals Instead, you’ll often find that breakfast is included, and lunch and dinner can be pre-paid before your arrival, or paid for locally. We would advise including a half-board meal plan (breakfast and dinner) when booking your holiday with Turquoise, as meals are generally high across all of the islands in the archipelago. This takes the sting out of our check-out bill, and puts the pleasure back into ordering, as you won't be worried about the individual prices of each dish. In most cases, you'll save money by paying for meals in advance, too.
Being an archipelago, it's no surprise that Tahitian waters are abundant with fresh seafood that will end up on your plate! The likes of tuna, lobster and crab feature most prominently on menus. The delicate scent of vanilla you can smell across a number of French Polynesia's islands is used as a flavouring in many local dishes, while Tahiti's tropical status means pineapples (said to be the juiciest and sweetest in the world) and coconuts are common, too.
When it comes to dishes to try, we'd recommend mahi mahi (dolphinfish served with a vanilla sauce) and Tahiti's national dish, poisson cru (raw fish marinated in lime juice served with vegetables and coconut milk).
While the wealth of white beaches and heavenly overwater villas might tempt you to admire the tropical views, there are a remarkable amount of things to do in The Islands of Tahiti. The luminous lagoons afford fantastic snorkelling and diving opportunities, where you can come nose-to-fin with colourful fish, reef sharks and rays, while the islands' emerald interior are laced with many trails for hiking or on an all-terrain vehicle.
There are also many ways to experience local life, from wandering authentic villages to learning more about two of its most famous products with pearl and vanilla farm visits.
Of course, if you do just want to chill, then canoe breakfasts delivered straight to your villa or romantic picnics on a private motu (islet) delver memorable experiences.
The Islands of Tahiti has two national languages: French and Tahitian, with the latter preferred by locals. Even though you will easily get back with English, locals will always appreciate a few words or phrases spoken to them in Tahitian!
The capital of The Islands of Tahiti is Papeete, which is found on the archipelago's largest island, Tahiti. It's a busy city with a bustling harbour and most visitors use it for an overnight stay, before travelling onward to other islands. If you do stay overnight, make sure you pick up a bite to eat from its les roulottes (mobile food trucks), which serve everything from pizza to crepes.
The Islands of Tahiti welcome a year-round tropical climate. The dry season runs from May to November, where temperatures consistently stay around the high 20s (degrees Celsius) during the day. The wet season is from November to April and temperatures can exceed 30°C; despite there being the increased chance of rainfall, there are still plenty of sunshine hours to enjoy. Read our travel advice on The Islands of Tahiti for more information on the best time to visit.
Technically speaking, no. The Islands of Tahiti is actually a French overseas collectivity but it is completely self-governing. Its independence means it's referred to as an 'overseas country' by France, though that's more of a designation, rather than a legal status.
The Islands of Tahiti are also commonly, but incorrectly, referred to as just 'Tahiti'. However, this is actually the name of the biggest island in the archipelago.
Found in the heart of the South Pacific Ocean, halfway between Australia and South America, The Islands of Tahiti (or French Polynesia) is a tropical archipelago of 118 islands. They're split up into five main island groups: the Society Islands (which comprises the Windward and Leeward Islands), the Tuamotu archipelago, Gambier Islands, Marquesas Islands and Austral Islands.

What Our Travellers Say
“As enthusiastic retirees with a serious case of wanderlust, my wife and I now travel abroad at least four times a year. We'd been subscribed to The Turquoise Holiday Company mailing list for years, but it wasn't until we spotted a special offer for Thailand in November 2019 that we finally booked our first holiday with them.Interestingly, a few months earlier, while waiting for a flight to the Maldives in June 2019, we noticed another couple travelling with a Turquoise travel bag. At the time, we thought little of it, but looking back, it was perhaps an early sign that we were about to discover a travel company that would become our go-to specialist for luxury holidays. Our first experience with Turquoise was excellent and gave us the confidence to book a Maldives holiday for June 2020. Then, of course, COVID struck and brought the travel industry to a standstill. What impressed us most was the way Turquoise handled an incredibly difficult situation. Rather than leaving us in limbo, they worked tirelessly to rearrange our holiday multiple times, adapting to constantly changing restrictions and circumstances. Eventually, in November 2020, despite flying with a different airline and staying at a different hotel than originally planned, we were able to enjoy a much-needed Maldives escape when many other travel plans around the world had simply been cancelled altogether. That experience cemented our trust in The Turquoise Holiday Company. Since then, we have booked many holidays through them and now use them for the vast majority of our trips abroad. What consistently sets Turquoise apart is the quality of its people. Every member of staff we have dealt with has been knowledgeable, professional, friendly and exceptionally thorough. Their expertise, attention to detail and willingness to go the extra mile give us complete confidence that every aspect of our holiday is being carefully managed. In an age where genuine customer service can be hard to find, The Turquoise Holiday Company continues to deliver it in abundance. We would have no hesitation in recommending them to anyone looking for a travel agent that combines expert knowledge, outstanding customer care and absolute professionalism. They have played a major part in some of our most memorable travel experiences, and we look forward to booking many more adventures with them in the years ahead.”
“Right from first contact, Bethany & colleagues were great. Bethany adjusted the holiday offered several times to get it just how we wanted it, & it was everything she said it would be. We went to Coco Bodu Hithi & it was amazing, I thoroughly recommend it. Turquoise have a great app which was really useful & they were there for us all along the way, even sending me updates on flights. I recommend them 100%.”
“Everything was so efficient from our very first contact. We are not seasoned travellers so the support/help/advice we received from Lucy all the way through was so reassuring. Even the daftest question was never too much trouble. Looking forward to booking again for 2028 - we wouldn’t dream of looking forward alternative travel agents. Thank you so much 🥰”
“I am so thankful we used Turquoise Holidays! From start to finish they were exceptional. A shout out to Martha who designed and organised our honeymoon for us - she took the stress out of planning, understood the vision and put together our dream holiday. She was a pleasure to work with and it was beyond anything we could have imagined. I can’t tell you how relieved we were to have all of our transport and transfers sorted the other side. Especially for a trip like ours with lots of flights and travel, using Turquoise Holidays made it so much easier. We also used the concierge services to book activities and they were so helpful and kind. Will definitely use Turquoise again, I can’t wait for our next holiday!”
“Sophie was brilliant from start to finish. From the very first email she was professional but also had that friendly touch. Any amendments I wanted to our honeymoon plans she came back with the updated itinerary. Even after 5 iterations she was still incredible with the responses. I would highly recommend using turquoise travel and we will definitely be using them again”
“Amazing Family Holiday and just what we asked for! We wanted a resort and location that was approriate for small kids but had all the luxuries for adults, and Turquoise holidays provided a great service. Commincation was great and they took all the pain out of the small details and provided an excellent service and the value was outstanding!”
“Just got back from a fantastic Holiday in Mauritius with which I booked the Holiday with Turquoise Holidays. This is my first time I have booked with this company and I will have no hesitation in booking again, from start to finish the correspondence I had with Milly and the rest of the team at Turquoise as been outstanding. Thankyou Neil & Jane”
“Enjoyable trip to Canada.Jonty made excellent recommendations as always, hotels were great in every respect.Highly recommend Turquoise for their advice and insight into places and hotels at a very good price point. We have used many times in the past and will continue do use again in the future.”
“Mrs Stone organised all my flights details and extra help extremely well.”
“This was the best travel agent experience we have ever had. We went on a bespoke 5 week trip to Australia. Our agent, Stuart, designed a trip exactly matching our requirements and really listened to us when we described the brief. What came through strongly during the course of the trip was Turquoise’s ability to not just source the best properties/accommodation, but the best rooms in those properties. Likewise with the tours and activities that they organised — everything felt highly curated and considered. When any queries arose or we wanted to change the bugs, the team was super-responsive through the app. We will definitely use them again have recommended them to many friends.”
“We had a really good time and thoroughly enjoyed ourselves. The blend of activity and adventures in Sri Lanka mixed with the relaxation and tranquility of the Maldives, worked extremely well and the itinerary put together by Turquoise was excellent.Overall we were very impressed with Sri Lanka and whilst hectic at times enjoyed our busy agenda. We found all the accommodation wonderful and food was plentiful and enjoyable. We were pleased to have climbed the two rocks to see the sunset/sunrise albeit a bit daunting when we realised the climbing challenge ahead.Special mention has to go to our driver/guide Mahesh who was excellent and really helped make our trip run smoothly. He was knowledgeable, practical and always prompt. In fact our only hiccup occurred when trying to leave the Notary House to fly to Male. We had booked a 4am alarm call, bags to be picked up at 4.20am and “breakfast to go” ready for 4.30am. Fortunately we had used our own phone alarms as we awoke to a completely silent hotel, no alarm call, no bags collected and no breakfast, and no driver. We did however just about hear a car hooting and on seeing some lights at the end of the long drive to the hotel set off and found Mahesh. However, the gates were padlocked shut and Mahesh was locked out and we were locked in! Fortunately Mahesh had a number for the hotel and after ringing several times, an apologetic staff member appeared and unlocked the gate and off we went. Phew !After making our plane we successfully arrived in Male and took the speedboat to Velassaru. We thought the island was impeccably well kept and had obviously been recently modernised in many areas. Our room - 205 - was perfectly positioned close to the Chill Bar, and ideal for drinking cocktails and watching the sunset, yet only a small walk from all other amenities including the buffet restaurant where we ate all our meals. We found the breakfast plentiful and varied but thought the offerings for dinner were less extensive than on other islands( maybe we were a bit spoilt at Six Senses last year ! ). We were also disappointed that given we were half board had we wished to use any of the other 3 à la carte restaurants for dinner then this was additionally chargeable albeit with a 30% discount. And yes, sadly the view from our villa of Thilafushi was certainly not ideal or romantic but overall we still agreed that Velassaru was a lovely island with everything you would expect from a trip to the Maldives.Overall we were very satisfied and would consider doing a similar trip again and definitely using Turquoise albeit I think we would allow for a longer journey from Male and take the seaplane even if that did eat into a bit more of our holiday time. Thanks again to Anthony for listening to our requirement and tailoring our trip to suit our needs.Steve ( and Cathy )”
“Always so helpful, professional and efficient, thank you once again!”
