Discover The Great Barrier Reef

Come and experience The Great Barrier Reef, as seen on Sir David Attenborough's new BBC Series.

“I’m very excited to be returning to the reef with all the latest technology and science to see one of the most important places on the planet in a whole new way.” Sir David Attenborough

Australia’s Great Barrier Reef is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world! It is the world’s most extensive stretch of coral reef - so large, that it is the only living thing visible from space! It is not one continuous reef but is made up of over 2900 reefs and 900 islands. Astronauts have described it as a ‘thin white line off the east coast of Australia’. It has some of the highest marine life diversity in the world and in fact, there are more different species of animals and plants in a cubic metre of the Great Barrier Reef than in any other environment in the world. There’s little wonder it is one of the jewels in Australia’s crown and a UNESCO World Heritage Site. It stretches for more than 2000kms off Australia’s north-east coast and its pristine islands are home to some of Australia’s most beautiful and exclusive resorts – all of which are easily accessible via seaplane, small plane or boat.

In December 2015, Sir David Attenborough was seen in the Great Barrier Reeflandmark series (3 x 60 minute programmes) which launched on the BBC. We didn't miss an episode as he uncovered the ways in which scientists are trying to preserve the reef. The series used pioneering camera technology to draws on the latest research to investigate the reef in revelatory ways – including using satellite scanning to show the 2,300km expanse of living coral as well as revolutionary macro lenses that will captured the reef’s tiniest, normally unseen life-forms.

Combined with David Attenborough’s masterful story-telling on location and his trademark engagement with wildlife, this series will provided us with a unique insight into this global treasure and its fascinating history and secrets. Attenborough first filmed on the Great Barrier Reef in 1957 and he has always retained a passionate interest in its unique status as the world’s largest living organism.

If you have seen the series and are considering a once-in-a-lifetime visit to this spectacular natural wonder, we have listed below some of our favourite Great Barrier Reef island resorts which easily fit into a longer Australia itinerary.  Turquoise Holidays looks forward to helping you turn your Great Barrier Reef dreams into a reality …
