Fast-paced and fabulous, Hong Kong is a heady blend of skyscrapers and shopping, culture and cuisine. With British influence still prevalent in many ways, Hong Kong is a unique enclave in the People’s Republic of China, where it is possible to turn off a street crowded with gleaming skyscrapers and discover a tiny market dedicated to traditional Chinese herbs and medicines.
For tourists, Hong Kong can be divided into two main categories: Hong Kong Island and Kowloon. Hong Kong Island is really the heart of the city, with main areas such as Lan Kwai Fong, Admiralty and Causeway Bay located here. Kowloon is easily reached by an enjoyable ferry ride and it is from here that the stunning views of the Hong Kong Island skyline can truly be enjoyed. Whilst Hong Kong Island is the main financial district, Kowloon has a lot to offer for leisure travellers.
Hong Kong’s highlights are many and include a wide range of museums such as the fascinating Hong Kong Heritage Museum, Hong Kong Museum of Art and Hong Kong Science Museum. It is still possible to find ancient Chinese temples to explore amid the modernity of this frenetic island. Much colonial era architecture also remains and many buildings have now been declared a monument, including Old Stanley Police Station and the Victoria Prison Compound. Hong Kong Island is a shopper’s paradise, with Central and Causeway Bay being two of the most popular shopping districts. Malls, classy department stores, international and Hong Kong based designers abound here. The famous Stanley Street market is renowned for photographic equipment. On Kowloon, the area around Tsim Sha Tsui has luxury malls and factory outlets as well as the ever popular Nathan Road. As befits Hong Kong’s chic reputation, the city offers some world class dining and nightlife. Hong Kong’s super sleek bars and formal dining venues are really the place to see and be seen. Booking in advance is essential for the top tables. Hong Kong really can cater to suit every need. From top class theatre, art, spa therapies to sporting events such as the Rugby Sevens, Hong Kong is a thoroughly modern and enticing city which will leave you feeling as if you have only scratched the surface of her many treasures.
