Angama Mara, Kenya

This truly stunning owner-run safari lodge is dramatically set on the edge of the Oloololo escarpment which forms part of the Great Rift Valley. It overlooks the world famous Maasai Mara and offers spectacular far-reaching views across the surrounding savannah. The lodge comprises two identical, intimate camps, spread across two of three kopjes (small hills) - the third kopje was the film location for key scenes in the classic Sydney Pollock movie ‘Out of Africa’ – fans can re-live the romance of this iconic safari film with a picnic in this very spot!

Sleep

The name ‘Angama Mara’ was inspired by the Swahili word for ‘suspended in mid-air’ – each of the spectacular suites hangs suspended off the edge of the escarpment, with vast floor-to-ceiling glass walls which take full advantage of the breathtaking 180 degree views. As a guest, you can enjoy the wonders of safari from your indulgent suite – sit back and relax with an ice cold G&T on your expansive deck and watch the wildlife come to you. You will often see eland, zebra, giraffe and impala meandering past. Every detail in the suites has been exquisitely considered – from the oversized bed, the luxurious stand-alone bath, the rocking chairs on your deck, the crystal gin and whisky carafes to the old school coffee table books, the delicious macadamia nuts and Kenyan teas and coffees! The bold, striking design takes its inspiration from the traditional Maasai colours of red and blue.

eat

The mouth-watering food is a real highlight with fresh local ingredients adding to the experience. There are no fixed meal-times – dining is completely flexible and tailored to your needs and desires. Unique to Angama Mara is the Shamba – Kiswahili for vegetable garden. The lay-out is reminiscent of a snakes and ladders board and guests are encouraged to pick and taste as they wander through. Shamba-to-table lunches are a big thing here – imagine fresh ingredients accompanied by a wicker basket of delicious bread, local cheese and a crisp glass of chilled wine – all this whilst taking in the sweeping views. This is the Mara at its most glorious and best!

Play

Naturally, the main activity is wildlife-spotting on game drives - an experience that provides a lifetime of memories. Just a 10 minute drive from the lodge, the acacia-dotted grasslands of the Mara Triangle are home to abundant herds of Africa’s great mammals. The state-of-the-art vehicles have been specially equipped and converted, with comfortable seats, ample legroom, charging stations and canvas roofs for respite from the sun. On the afternoon game drive, you will enjoy a sundowner drink as the sun sets over the plains. Walking safaris with Maasai naturalists provide an opportunity to learn the traditional ways of the Maasai people including the medicinal use of plants, customs and legends along with singing and dancing. Evenings are often spent stargazing by the fireside. There is also a Photographic Studio where guests have access to state-of-the-art editing software, photographic tutorials from the in-house wildlife photographer as well as camera rentals.

Pamper

The main mess area offers the perfect place to relax during the heat of the day – there is a swimming pool as well as a fitness centre. You can also enjoy a post-safari massage in the comfort of your suite.
