A Great British Escape

The Newt in Somerset

The younger sister to one of our all-time favourites, Babylonstoren in South Africa, The Newt offers everything we look for in a Turquoise experience, just a little closer to home. Perfect for a UK staycation in the Somerset countryside, the former Georgian home has been given the same injection of colour, character and flair of its Cape Winelands counterpart, while firmly maintaining its English country garden roots. And wow, what a garden! Open to be enjoyed by day visitors as well as those staying in the hotel, The Newt’s self-sustaining abundance of produce surrounding the honey-coloured walls of Hadspen House is truly something to behold. A working farm, cydery, kitchen garden, mushroom house, bakery, butchery and ice-cream parlour are just some of the cogs which turn the wheel. This is quintessential England at its best and while we navigate the winding roads of long-haul travel, a Turquoise staycation in the UK seems the perfect way to bridge the gap.

Rest your head

Boutique by name, boutique by nature, The Newt is home to 23 stunning rooms and suites, each unique and tastefully designed in keeping with its location. Although a small boutique hotel, The Newt welcomes families with open arms. Younger ones will adore the ice-cream parlour and farm shop, with acres of wood and farm wonderland to explore from dawn until dusk.

For families of four, we recommend the Hayloft & Woolsack. Converted 18th-century farm buildings, which used to store the hay and wool, it can easily be combined into a family suite, offering one king-size bed and two twin beds, a spacious sitting room, wood-burning stove, complimentary mini larder and private terrace.

If you are looking to travel as part of a larger family or group, please let us know and we will advise on the best room options.

Cots can be provided for babies on a complimentary basis, subject to availability, in Hadspen Rooms, Hadspen Garden View Rooms, Stable Rooms, the Stable Loft, Clock House and Hayloft.

Guests under 16 years old are welcome to enjoy the spa pools from 9-10am and 4-5pm. Guests under 13 years old must sit for dinner by 7pm in the Botanical Rooms.

Garden to fork

Dining at The Newt hotel is an experience in itself, with every single plate served featuring produce which has been distilled, foraged, grown, reared, reaped, picked, plucked or pulled from the estate itself.

A celebration of colour, from ice cream to vegetables, the Garden Café opens daily for overnight and day guests alike, as does the Cyder Bar, one of the estate's biggest attractions, where you can enjoy tastings and teachings from The Newt's team of distillers, alongside freshly baked pastries and pies from the bakery.

Breakfast, lunch and dinner are served in the Botanical Rooms, a stunning duo of spaces including the immersive Glass Room and intimate Oak Room. Located in the hotel area, day guests are only able to dine here with prior reservations.
