Best time to visit the Maldives: a month-by-month guide

By Lucy Coleman

7 min read

A morning snorkel, lunch with your toes in the sand and the very difficult decision of whether to spend the afternoon lounging beside your pool or paddling in the lagoon. The Maldives truly is a paradise holiday destination. But when should you go? January to March generally offers the most reliably dry weather, making it a favourite for escaping the British winter. Yet the best time to visit the Maldives depends on more than sunshine. Manta rays, surf conditions, school holidays and the island you choose all have a part to play. We know the Maldives inside out, from the house reefs worth getting up early for to the villas that deserve the upgrade. Here’s how we’d approach choosing your dates.

When is the best time to visit the Maldives?

For a holiday centred around sunshine, swimming and time on the beach, January, February and March are our strongest recommendations. December and April are also popular, although both are transition months between monsoons and can bring more changeable conditions.

For manta encounters around Baa Atoll, consider May to November. For better-value hotel stays, look beyond the busiest winter and festive dates, provided you’re comfortable with a greater chance of rain.

Understanding Maldives weather

The Maldives stays warm throughout the year. What changes most is the rainfall, wind and conditions on the water, rather than the temperature. There are two main monsoons. The northeast monsoon, associated with drier weather, generally runs from January to March. The southwest monsoon, bringing wetter conditions, usually extends from mid-May to November. April and December sit between the two. These are seasonal patterns rather than fixed dates. Conditions vary between the northern, central and southern atolls, and showers are possible whenever you travel.

Maldives weather by month

January to March: the most reliably dry weather

January

January is a lovely month to swap cold mornings for breakfast overlooking the lagoon. It falls within the drier season and works particularly well for couples looking for a winter escape. Travelling after the festive period may also give you more flexibility over your choice of villa.

February

If sunshine is your main consideration, February is difficult to beat. Long-term records for Malé show it as the driest month, although that isn’t a promise of identical weather across every atoll. February half-term is popular with families, so plan ahead if you need a particular room configuration.

March

March remains a strong choice for dry weather, with temperatures beginning to rise. It’s a good month for combining beach time with snorkelling and diving. For couples whose ideal holiday involves frequent trips to the reef, choosing the right island matters just as much as choosing the month.

April to October: surfing, depending on the atoll and your ability

April

April can still deliver beautiful weather, but it marks the transition towards the wetter monsoon. Expect heat, humidity and the possibility of showers. Easter is a popular travel period, so April doesn’t automatically mean lower prices: your dates make a considerable difference.

May

The southwest monsoon usually establishes itself around mid-May. Rain becomes more likely, but this is also the beginning of the broader manta season around Hanifaru Bay. For travellers with flexible dates, it’s worth comparing hotel offers against the winter months.

June

June brings more variable weather, with sunshine mixed with showers and potentially windier conditions. It falls within the main surfing season and the manta-feeding season in Baa Atoll. A good choice if your holiday plans extend beyond uninterrupted sunbathing.

July

July remains warm, but it sits within the wetter season. Families can still enjoy a wonderful holiday, particularly with an island offering plenty to do between swims. Be prepared to move boat trips and other outdoor activities around the conditions rather than fixing everything in advance.

August

August is another option for families tied to school holidays, provided you accept some weather uncertainty. In Baa Atoll, seasonal plankton concentrations can draw manta rays to feeding areas. For keen snorkellers, that can be a compelling reason to travel during the British summer.

Better- value accommodation: often in the wetter months, outside school holidays

September

September can be wet and unsettled, so it wouldn’t be our first suggestion for someone prioritising consistently dry days. It can, however, appeal to couples looking beyond school holidays, particularly when a good hotel offer and the chance of manta encounters are part of the attraction.

October

October is often described as the start of the Maldives’ best season, but rain can still be significant. Treat it as a wetter-season holiday rather than guaranteed winter sunshine. It’s also within the manta season around Hanifaru Bay, giving October half-term another attraction for water-loving families.

November

November can bring sunny spells, but the southwest monsoon may continue and substantial rainfall remains possible. It’s worth considering if you’re flexible, especially for a longer stay, but January to March is a stronger choice if dry weather is your overriding priority.

December to April: a winter beach escape, allowing for transitional weather

December

Maldives weather in December can be more mixed than its winter-sun reputation suggests. The monsoon is changing, and showers may linger. Christmas and New Year are nevertheless highly sought-after: if you have your heart set on a particular island or villa, start planning early.

When is the best time for diving and snorkelling?

For clear underwater views, the drier months are generally a good starting point. Baros identifies December to April as its strongest visibility period, but conditions depend on the site, currents and recent weather. Plankton can reduce visibility during the wetter season, yet it also attracts larger marine life. Clearer water and the greatest feeding activity don’t necessarily arrive together. Tell us what you most want to see, and we’ll match the island and season accordingly. For easy access to underwater exploring, Baros Maldives is one of our favourites, with a house reef accessible from the beach. Having a wonderful reef close by means snorkelling can become part of almost every day, whenever conditions allow.

When can you see manta rays and whale sharks?

May to November is the main season to consider for Hanifaru Bay, where plankton-rich water attracts feeding manta rays. This protected bay is a snorkelling experience; scuba diving is not permitted. It isn’t the only place to encounter mantas, however. Different feeding areas and cleaning stations become productive at different times, so missing the Baa Atoll season doesn’t rule out a sighting elsewhere. For whale sharks, South Ari Atoll offers the possibility of encounters throughout the year. We’ll help you choose a suitable base and responsible excursion, while remembering that these are wild animals and sightings are never guaranteed.

Is the Maldives worth visiting in the rainy season?

Yes, for the right traveller. Hotel rates can be more appealing, the islands remain warm and there are still opportunities for sunshine, swimming and underwater exploring.

But we wouldn’t describe the Maldives rainy season as simply “a quick shower followed by blue skies”. Heavy rain, rougher water and longer unsettled spells are possible. If you have only a few nights and would be disappointed by time indoors, travelling during the driest months may be worth the additional cost. If you’re more flexible, a beautiful villa, excellent food and a good spa can make a wetter-season stay very appealing. The important thing is booking with the right expectations.

When should families and honeymooners go?

For families, February half-term and the Easter holidays combine school-holiday dates with a generally favourable weather window. July, August and October are also possibilities, but deserve an honest conversation about rainfall and what your children enjoy doing.

Look beyond the weather to the island itself. At Vakkaru Maldives, family accommodation, children’s facilities and a house reef give everyone different ways to enjoy their stay.

For honeymooners, January to March is a strong choice for sunshine. If you’re marrying in summer, you don’t necessarily need to delay your honeymoon, but we’ll talk you through the seasonal trade-offs before recommending an island.

Surfers should also consider their dates separately. At Six Senses Laamu, the surf season broadly runs from April to October, with the most suitable timing depending on your ability and the waves you want to ride.
