A Perfect Week in South Australia
Wine & Wildlife
From rolling vineyards and world-class cellar doors to pristine coastlines and untamed wilderness, this itinerary pairs two of South Australia’s biggest drawcards: the legendary Barossa Valley and wildlife-rich Kangaroo Island. It’s an easy journey that combines indulgent food and wine with unforgettable nature experiences, all within a short flight or scenic drive from Adelaide.
This is just one way to explore the region. If you’re after a more off-grid outback adventure, take a look at our alternative week in South Australia that explores the Flinders Ranges and Murray River.
Day 1 - Adelaide
Arrive in South Australia’s laid-back capital and spend a night at The Mayfair Hotel, perfectly positioned for exploring the city on foot. Wander the laneways, grab a coffee or cocktail, and soak up the relaxed city vibe before your wine country escape begins.
Days 2-3 - Barossa Valley
Head north into the Barossa Valley, just over an hour’s drive from Adelaide, where rolling vineyards, 100-year-old vines and boutique wineries await. Check in to The Louise, a luxury vineyard retreat offering sweeping views and one of Australia’s best regional restaurants. Spend your days hopping between cellar doors, grazing on local produce and soaking up the sun-drenched scenery.

Days 4-6 - Kangaroo Island
Make your way south via the scenic Fleurieu Peninsula, with time for a lunch stop by the beach or a detour to McLaren Vale, before crossing to Kangaroo Island by ferry or flying directly from Adelaide. Known as Australia’s answer to the Galapagos, Kangaroo Island is a haven for native wildlife, secluded beaches and dramatic coastlines. Choose to stay at Southern Ocean Lodge for the ultimate all-inclusive island experience, or Sea Dragon Lodge for a more intimate, self-contained stay with clifftop views and private beach access. Spend your days exploring Flinders Chase National Park, watching sea lions at Seal Bay or just relaxing with local wine and sweeping views.

Day 7 - Adelaide Hills
Fly back to the mainland and head straight into the Adelaide Hills for a final night of relaxed luxury. Stay at Mount Lofty House or the exclusive Sequoia Lodge, perched on the edge of a national park with views over the Piccadilly Valley. You’re only 15 minutes from the city, but it couldn’t feel further away – the perfect final stop.
Suggested Extensions
Port Lincoln: Extend your trip with two nights on the Eyre Peninsula, swimming with sea lions or taking on the adrenaline rush of shark cage diving.
Murray River: Spend a few peaceful days at The Frames, soaking up life on Australia’s longest river from your private luxury villa.
Flinders Ranges: Add a few nights in the outback at Arkaba or Rawnsley Park Station for epic landscapes and true wilderness.
Reverse the Route: Flying directly into Kangaroo Island from Sydney or Melbourne is easy – you can flip the itinerary and finish in the Barossa or Adelaide Hills instead.
